Lord of the Rings Master Replica FX Collectible Sting Sword Review

(More customer reviews)This sword is awesome and worth the $. It looks real, and it feels real in your hand. Even though the blade is composite/plastic, it looks like shining steel until you look closely and see that the edge is not sharp. Turn it on, and the blue glow appears to emanate from deep within the sword. The glow is completely even so it doesn't just look like someone put a light bulb inside a piece of plastic. The blade is reasonably durable, and the harder you hit things, the more "clanging" sound you'll hear. It actually sounds like what you image a sword might. A note of caution - and this should be expected; the instructions do warn you about hitting other hard items. I haven't been willing to experiment too much in this regard, but thus far I have not damaged the blade.
Overall a great novelty. If you're considering it for a kid who loves to sword or lightsabre fight, I'd look elsewhere as I'm sure it will not stand up to this treatment... Unless they appreciate LOTR enough to recognize it's "value".

This electronic replica of Frodo's Sting sword emits an eerie bluish glow whenever Orcs are nearby. This authentic Sting sword replica was cast from molds used to create the original movie prop used in Lord of the Rings trilogy. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay GM Toolkit Review

(More customer reviews)This is my first Amazon review...I usually can't be bothered with commenting on these things, but I do rely on the reviews of others to help me decide when I'm on the fence about a certain purchase...so, since I was so impressed with this product, I thought I'd share.
First off, I wouldn't call myself an FFG fanboy. I do, however, find that the quality of their products is consistently top-notch. As far as durability is concerned, I disagree with the previous reviewer's opinion on this. I don't feel that the packaging should drop the the rating that much. If you have already purchased the Core box set, the contents of this kit will fit in that box nicely. The first adventure module published and sold for this RPG (A Gathering Storm) is packaged exactly the same way as the GM toolkit. Also, the GM screen is worth the price of this kit alone. The artwork on it is amazing, there are all the rules summaries as well as a rules index on the GM side, and its not made of flimsy card. I did dock them slightly on durability due to the book being in soft-cover format.
Second, I am fairly new to RPG's. I played Dungeons and Dragons when I was about 12 years old, about 20 years ago now. I was drawn to this game because of the publisher's (Fantasy Flight Games) reputation and because of the world setting (I play Warhammer Fantasy Battles table top miniatures game by Games Workshop).
The pros...
-Great advice on creating original story arcs using classic story telling themes.
-Advice on story "hooks" (getting the players to bite).
-New concepts of Nemisis NPCs and NPC party sheets.
-Full color high quality printing and inspiring artwork.
-Pages of "alternate rules" suggestions on how to change up some of the core mechanics slightly to suit your groups' play style.
-Advice on new and helpful ways to use the "progress tracks" to aid in story development and .
-More standups.
-Awesome GM screen....man FFG knocked it out of the park with this one.
The cons...
-The book is about the size of one of the 4 books in the Core set (actually it's a little thin, more like the size of the tome of mysteries, or tome of Blessings), which is suitable for the price (esp. here on Amazon) but it left me wanting more, especially as a new GM.
-The book is soft cover, so wont stand up to abuse as much as a hardcover...though, to be fair, all the books in the core set and the one expansion adventure I picked up are the same. I think this just keeps them more affordable.
-I feel like this could have been included with the core set, perhaps as part of the "Tome of Adventure" but FFG is trying to make the most of their GW license here, and "expansion sets" are a big part of their business model.
Even if you are a veteran GM, the advice in this book could inspire you to step out of your established comfort zone and try a new story telling technique/formula. I think it's a great buy at Amazon.com as I purchased it at retail plus CA sales tax at my local game store. Amazon had not yet discounted this product when I decided to get it. Ultimately, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars due to how thin the book was. I think FFG could have packed a little more content in there for their suggested retail price.
Looking forward to the "Winds of Magic" expansion, hopefully Amazon will offer some sort of discount off of it's $50 price tag.

(More customer reviews)Wow -- I bought this to use at a bridal shower, and I must say that I was really surprised at just how, to put it bluntly, JUNKY the game is. Not only are the booklets flimsy and cheaply made, they are full of spelling and punctuation errors as well! There are also LOTS of repeat questions for whatever reason...
Not that I was totally surprised, but many of the questions are sexist or manage to force you to put down your partner's physical appearance, lack of tidiness, sexual ability ect. ect... No matter how funny those things might be to some players, like all jokes they get old after awhile, and with this game it does not take long.
Also, if you're offended by brazen sexism and heterosexism, this game is not for you... I found it odd how many times the game managed to start questions off with "If your husband were gay..." or "If your husband were a cross dresser..." not to mention the sexist and out of date questions regarding gender roles... I always think the most interesting questions are the ones that push your limits as to what you know about your partner, not how many times you can comment on their big butt or small package.
Honestly, I feel like I am coming off as a humorless P.C. freak, but I really am not -- I love to play funny board games just as much as the next person! :) Like I said in the title, this game would be much more fun if you made up your own questions and used a marker and some paper... Even if you love the Newlywed game in all it's sexist and depreciating glory, you are bound to at least be disappointed with the lack of quality of the game itself...

(More customer reviews)This is by far my favorite anime figure that I own. It is gorgeous. She is just as cute and bubbly as in the picture and even more alluring than the pictures. The figrure is beautiful and smooth. The colors are far more bright and beautiful than the pictures shown. The shadowing is done more vividly. It does not look as flat as this imag or others I have seen show. It does have some odd placelment of shadowing on the body of the figure (shadows where there shouldn't really be one) but they are not really something that takes away from the figure at all or is excessively noticable. Some of the spots on her skin are so bright pink, it looks as though she had just been spanked in that area. So it is a plus or a minus, based on preferences. But, as I said, I love this figure and recommend her to anyone who enjoys a "perfect figure".

(More customer reviews)When I saw only one review for this game--and a very bad review at that--I felt obligated to give my opinion so that people can make a more informed decision about purchasing this game.
Personally, I love this game and it stands out from my collection because of its co-operative game play. Instead of playing against each other, the object is to work together to beat the game (destroy the ring)--just like the Fellowship in the books/movies. In that way, it is great lesson in teamwork--for those of you interested in the educational aspect of this game (keep in mind that it's meant for ages 12 to Adult however, because of the complexity).
It's challenging in its normal game play and can be easily adjusted to further increase the difficulty. There have been many times that the game has defeated us--making victory that much more sweeter when we do win!
There are also expansion packs available for the game for when you're ready for something new. If you look at the reviews for some of the expansions (Friends & Foes, Sauron, & Battlefields), you'll see that a lot of other people really do love this game. I think it's the best game based on "The Lord of the Rings" yet.

Runebound: 2nd Edition Review

(More customer reviews)'Runebound' is recent entry in the board-based fantasy adventure game market. Board-based, in this context, means players are limited to moving on a board and having adventures based on cards that are drawn after moving. (Those of you old enough to remember Games Workshop's 'Talisman' should be familiar with the concept.)
Play is relatively simple, although the first game or so will go slowly as players adjust to the system. Each player selects a hero, gets some gold, then sets to adventuring. Terrain dice are rolled to determine how players may move during their turn. Players finishing their move on a city may heal wounds, sell treasure, and buy equipment or hire allies. Players who finish their move on an encounter space may trigger a game-altering event or be given a quest, but will always have to fight a monster. Combat is fairly simple; roll the supplied dice, add the character's combat value, and see if the total beats the monster's. Defeat enough monsters and your hero collects gold and experience, which in turn enables him or her to improve his combat power. There are four levels of encounters to be fought; the player who defeats the final boss monster (or three sub-bosses) in the toughest level wins the game.
The rules are well-written and have clear examples of what players may and may not do during their turn, but care needs to be taken while reading them. I recommend players play through a few turns slowly with the rules in hand as they figure out the game.
'Runebound' also has quality components. The many cards are printed on heavy stock, the counters are made of thick cardboard, and the dice are heavy and solid. The map seems durable for the light use it should see. There are also 12 plastic miniature heroes; sadly, these aren't painted, but they do match their pictures on the hero cards.
The real beauty of the 'Runebound' system is its replayability. After playing the enclosed game a few times players may look for a new challenge. The publisher has already released expansion card sets and map sets that expand on the original adventure, and imaginative players could easily design their own adventures.
'Runebound' is a good family game; players as young as 8 could probably play the game without much difficulty. I recommend it for anyone looking for something light but fun to fill a Saturday evening.

Britannia Review

(More customer reviews)BRITANNIA is, indeed, a difficult game to play. But that does not mean the experience will not be a pleasant one.
The dificulty arises from the fact that there are a lot of exceptions and foot notes to the rules of the game. These exceptions were clearley designed to portray history in a more accurate way and add to the flavour of the game. It works, but as a collateral effect I'd say it's almost impossible to play BRITTANIA, at least the first two or three times, without making totally inadvertent rules errors while playing.
The game was really designed with four players in mind, with three or five player it gets clearly unbalanced.Maybe it was pressure form the publisher to try to sell to a broader audience, I don't know. Anyway, this ia a personal opinion, maybe people playing with other number thatn four players will find it efficient also.
It's indeed a time consuming game. Rarely it ends before fours hours playing.
The game components are totally adequate, nothing fancy, but fundamentally operational. Game board very beautiful. Rule book is well designed and with good examples.
This is a war game through and through, but with clever and fast combat resolution mechanics (based in D6 dice) and without thousands of complicated playing pieces that keep stacking upon each other in a hexagonal board. Of course, since there are dice involved, luck plays a big part, and a whole carefully planned strategy may be destroyed by a sequence of two or three bad luck dice rolling. But you can easily regain it by good dice rolling when defending... What I say is: with a lot of battles solely resolved by dice rolling, no matter how good a strategist or historian you are, luck is a strong factor in BRITANNIA.
In general, it's no wonder it's one of the few out of print Avalon Hill games that managed to get new life with another publisher. It's exciting, gorgeous to look at and informative.
