He has chosen to make wearing a fedora a part of that. I really wasn't sure if he was serious, (ball caps had been his thing, when he wore anything on his head at all!) and this was an inexpensive way to see if it worked for him.
(The Indiana Jones tag is almost unnoticeable, making it look more like an authentic hat and not a prop.)
He's been wearing it day in and day out since Christmas, in all kinds of weather. (15 days!) It has even survived being slept on by his little sister! (Long car trip; he left it on the carseat between them; she's 7 and had slumped over in the dark, asleep; he'd fallen asleep first!)
So I heartily recommend this, whether for a costume prop, or a style option!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this Lego set for my 9 year old son. He had looked at it prior to Christmas, saw the price and said "I can only dream of getting something like that!". It was well worth every penny spent just to see his face when he opened it! Although it is recommended for 16 and up, at 9 he was able to put it together without only a little help from his older brother (age 19) and it was finished in about 6 hours total. I would recommend this for any young boy who loves Legos!

Arkham Horror: Black Goat of the Woods Review

(More customer reviews)If your games of Arkham Horror have become predictable and easy, this expansion will cure what ails you. The addition of the Black Goat herald makes the game easily twice as hard. You can use the new goodies without the herald, though, if you don't want to be on the edge of your seat all game. Also, there are rules for adjusting game difficulty, which is nice.
It'll take about one game to get the new rules down. Certainly it's worth the money and time to get new cards and items that make the game more interesting and versatile.

(More customer reviews)My husband and I love Munchkin and were excited to see that there are a variety of themed sets available. I am a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft, so Munchkin Cthulhu was right up my alley. The game is just as fun as the original while including several fun new rules. I love the cultist class and enjoy the green die that came with the set. This is a great game for 3-6 people, though you can play with just two people but it's not as enjoyable. The cards are colorful and the illustrations are wonderful. The game is easy to learn and easy to teach to others. Games usually last about 30 minutes to an hour depending on the cards drawn, but you can play a longer game by downloading the free "Epic" level rules from the Munchkin website. The 3 other Cthulhu Munchkin sets add a lot of fun to the game, but it's a good time just with this set. And as usual this set can be mixed with other Munchkin sets for more craziness!
The only thing that would make the game better is if several green 10-sided dice were included in the set (for use in keeping track of your level). All in all, a wonderful purchase!

(More customer reviews)My son and I have purchased all the Arkham Horror expansions. This is the latest one. It is a big expansion, with lots of materials and an additional game board.
A person needs the base Arkham Horror set to go with this expansion, in order to play it.
We set up the game with the base set and this new expansion, but put away materials from other, earlier expansions. This gives the new expansion more of an opportunity to be fully appreciated.
Generally, this may be the toughest expansion yet. Every game has players battling a Great Old One, as is always the case. The new Great Old Ones that come with this set are very challenging. New features include a private challenge for each investigator, which adds interest. There are also about 275 new cards to be added to the original game deck. The price for this expansion is a bit stiff, but Amazon prices it with a major discount compared to other sources. And you do get "lots more stuff."
Anyway, we have been having great fun with the new Innsmouth Expansion. We only win about half the time -- that adds to the fun.
The art work and creative imagination of the game designers have paid off in a terrific game.
Note: The website associated with this game encourages that players create "house rules." In other words, players can get together and agree to modify the official game rules in various ways. So if the game seems too difficult, it is easy to make a few adjustments, thereby ensuring success at least part of the time.
Those who own the original Arkham Horror game will probably get great fun and entertainment out of the new set.
For any interested, the new Innsmouth Horror expansion is based on a novelette by H.P. Lovecraft, entitled "The Shadow Over Innsmouth." Some of you may enjoy checking this out of the library and reading it. It is included in most collections of Lovecraft's short fiction. This reading will enrich the game experience for you.
As I write this, Halloween is only a week away. What a great fun project for Halloween! ! !

Arkham Horror: the Lurker at the Threshold Expansion Review

(More customer reviews)The Lurker at the Threshold is an excellent expansion for intermediate and advanced players of Arkham Horror, offering a variety of subtle - and not so subtle - changes to game play which make it less predictable and more challenging. Most obvious is the eponymous evil himself who tempts all players with Faustian bargains. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to refuse his assistance, and all must pay the price when the Devil comes to collect.
Like all heralds, playing with the Lurker increases the game's difficulty and adds more minutiae to Mythos, but for me the new gates are the real challenge. As if gates that move around or randomly eat you were not bad enough, the inclusion of split gates (portals to two worlds) reduces the total number of gates in the game; never before had my play group feared the Ancient One's awakening because there were no markers left in the stack.
As I have come to expect from Fantasy Flight, the artwork and build quality of The Lurker at the Threshold are both top notch... and, as always, choking and sanity hazards make it unsuitable for young children.
For forcing me to use different strategies, and for devouring my investigators without warning, I will give the Devil his due: five stars.

However, I would not recommend this toy to children because of the small gun that comes with him. Major choking hazard!!!!! Also, a child could easily poke is eye out on the spikes on his back. My only other criticism is that he has balancing issues. When you try to stand him up, he falls over a lot. I had him on a shelf and he fell off and his foot broke off (not very durable either). I still like the toy and I ordered a replacement on amazon.

FunKeys Specialty Starter Kit Review

(More customer reviews)My 8-year old son loves the UB Funkeys, plays it every chance he gets, and has already acquired several new Funkeys. It's a little like Club Penguin without the monthly fee - though the cost of the new Funkeys would pay for several years of Club Penguin so it's not clear you're saving anything. Still, it'll be a hit for most preteen kids. BUT...

You've got to get it working first. The out of box installation fails - you have to download a driver patch from their website (which is now fully operational - it wasn't working properly when I installed, which colored the experience). The patch has to be installed during product installation - read the installation instructions on both the toy and the patch very carefully.
Another major glitch occurred after my son had been using it for a while. The Funkey software "phones home" on startup, and suddenly decided it wanted to download and install an update. It did this when my son started up the game, with no prior notification and no request for confirmation. Unfortunately, the installation failed because my son does not have administrator privileges, and afterwards the game was unusable. I had to reinstall, which lost all history files, so my son had to start over (fortunately, the game is fun enough that he didn't mind).
In my opinion, there's no excuse for not requesting confirmation and permission for a download, or for assuming all people playing a toy aimed at preteens are administrators. There's also no excuse for not providing an option to preserve player history on a reinstall. So the Radica people deserve credit for creating an addictive toy, and also deserve a slap to the face for not understanding some basic principles of user-friendly software design.

This specialty starter kit will have you well on your way to U.B. Funkey world -- and a possible collection addiction. Funkeys are creative vinyl characters that plug into a larger Funkey hub attached to a computer in order to travel around their virtual world, play games, build a "crib," and interact with other Funkeys. This starter kit includes the 5-inch-tall white Funkey hub, USB cable, two 2.75-inch-tall Funkeys, and installation software. All in all there are 42 different Funkey characters: three different colors in 14 different designs. Of the three in each design, one is quite common, one is rare, and the third is very rare by collection standards.

To log your Funkey on, simply stand it on the "hub" attached through the USB port. You’ll see your character’s avatar match the appearance of the Funkey plugged in and you’ll be able to visit locations and play games that are attributed to that Funkey’s properties. To encourage collection of additional Funkeys, Radica implemented a few clever rules. For instance there is a coin system, which awards different coin values depending on the Funkey currently in play. Items that can be purchased with those coins also vary with the character in use, and, lastly, certain games are only unlocked and available if the right Funkey is plugged in to the hub. Which means the more Funkeys you collect, the more virtual places and games you can experience and the more coins you can accumulate.

By playing games in the U.B. Funkeys world, characters earn coins that they can then use for purchasing items for their "crib." These rooms are customizable, from wall colors to furniture and plants to accessories, and can also be uploaded for friends to see. Just give your "crib" a name, share it with your friends, and they can visit anytime they’re logged on. There are four zones that offer a total of 16 games for players to conquer, and 30 stores where they can spend their hard earned coins on more than 1,000 virtual items. Now the question is: Are you Funkey?

(More customer reviews)My daughter received this for her 7th birthday. She became and Indy fan after playing the Indiana Jones lego Wii game. We (husband, myself and daughter) have played this game 3 times already and we all enjoy it. There are different paths for different movies and you are to try and take/save artifacts from the world and each other as well as avoid the typical Indiana Jones "traps." You collect and lose partners along that way that can be good (ie: willie, brody, jones sr) or bad partners who can take money, lose artifacts and turns for you. You at the very least pick up an adventure card and follow the directions during your turn so it isn't just a boring move to a spot game. Each game can go completely different and although there is some strategy to it, a 7yr old can just as easily win this game as an adult. The game is for 2-4 players but since you need to go thru the adventure card, it tends to go faster with more people. It can be a good 45-60min game with just 2 people. The box states it is for 9+ but I think any child with good reading skills and loves Indy would enjoy this game. At the very least, young kids could team up with a parent which would be fun as well. It is much different then most typical kids games so we all have really enjoyed this one. Although I don't think many adults would enjoy playing this with just each other, I highly recommend it for Indy-fan families!!!

Talisman: The Magical Quest Game, 4th edition Review

(More customer reviews)The board game "Talisman" has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best fantasy board games ever made. I have been a die hard fan ever since picking up the Second Edition boxset back in the late 1980s, and I couldn't even imagine how many hours I have spent vying for the Crown of Command. I still have all of the Second Edition expansions, from the Dungeon and City up to the Timescape and Dragons, including the cut-out special characters from Games Workshop's "White Dwarf" magazine.
Because I love the original so much, (I ignored the Third Edition, which tried to updated things to make the game more in-line with RPGs including things like "Experience Points" and connecting Talisman even further to the Games Workshop "Warhammer Universe.") it took me awhile to give this Fourth Edition of "Talisman" a try. I finally gave it a chance at a local gaming convention and was hooked again.
This Fourth Edition takes a basic "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to this classic boardgame, keeping the Second Edition essentially intact but introducing some of the better fixes from the Third Edition. The board itself is identical, although enlarged and with updated artwork. The card text is almost unchanged (including characters who "plod off to the discard pile") although none of the original art was retained.
Probably the most notable change was making "Life" a variable starting number, just like Strength and Craft. Some of the characters start with five (Warrior) or even six (Troll) life instead of the standard four. The Prophetess, one of the most powerful characters in the Second Edition, has been de-powered a bit. She can now draw one card, and then chose to either keep that card or discard it and draw another, which she must encounter. That was a nice edition as in the old version The Prophetess was so powerful she was boring to play. An additional element called "fate counters" has been added which allow for the re-rolling of a single die if you pay a counter. Craft-defeated monsters can also be cashed-in now in the same way as Strength-defeated monsters.
Fantasy Flight games has done a tremendous job with the production values of this version of "Talisman." Aside from the updated artwork, the counters are all hard-plastic with the Strength, Craft and Life counters being colored cones that come in 1-count and 5-count versions. The cards are on laminated cardstock which will last through repeated shuffling and drink-spilling. Really, everything has gone through a major upgrade.
If I had any disappointments with this Fourth Edition they are minor. The game board itself is too huge, taking up my entire kitchen table, which means that when I pick up any future expansions (of which I hope there will be many after Reaper, The Dungeonand Frostmarch) I will have to move to the floor in order to have a space large enough to play.
I also would have appreciated it if Fantasy Flight had balanced out the gender ration of characters when commissioning the new artwork. This was something I wouldn't have noticed except when I was playing with my wife she wanted to play a female character and all that was available was The Sorceress and The Prophetess. Several characters, like the Assassin, the Thief, the Warrior, the Elf, etc...could have easily been made female in the artwork without changing the game-play in any way.
I have great hopes for this new Fourth Edition of "Talisman," and hope that great things are forth coming. I would love to see some old favorites appear, like the "Champion of Chaos" and the "Horrible Black Void," along with some new ideas and expansions.

My interest, really, was in the WWI configuration of this class, as they would have appeared at Jutland. Unfortunately, this is configured as it appeared in its latest, WWII, form. Other than that, I see no faults in it.

We played with as few as two players (though the game recommends a minimum of three) and as many as five players, and it was always fun and balanced. The players varied in sex and age: boys and girls both, from five to forty-five. Everyone had a great time!
Each game lasts from ten minutes to thirty minutes, and the game permits a wide ragne of styles from aggressive to defensive. When you've mastered the strategy of the basic game, you can make it harder by choosing particular planes play with (actualy historical WWII fighters), each one adding individual special abilities. Not only does that provide you with an advantage, but if forces you to think about your opponent's advantages.
Game play is a mixture of strategy and guesswork. There are no dice, so there's no random chance, but you don't know which maneuver cards your opponents have, and how they'll move. You're forced to make guesses about what's most likely. That adds quite a fun mix to the challenge of forumulating your own strategy given the maneuver cards you've drawn.
I also like the high quality of the game board, game pieces, and cards. The instruction manual was well written, too, and it didn't take very long at all to figure out how to play.
All in all, an absolutely fantastic game! Highly recommended!

(More customer reviews)I got this game for my daughter (age 21) for Christmas. She's a H-U-G-E BTTF fan. I have to say, this seemed incredibly complicated while reading the directions. However, after a practice hand, we quickly caught on. You do not "have" to know the movies to play the game, but it certainly makes it more fun. We played several hands, most lasting satisfying not-too-short, not-too-long timeframes. One game did take a long time, which was still fine. We played with 3 players. I would think that 3 or 4 would be best, because the fewer players, the less crossover in the timelines, which is what creates a bit of havoc, i.e., fun. Great game - well done.
