I had wanted to host a murder mystery for a long time. I finally decided to commit to it and host one. While looking at all the different games I couldn't decide which one to do and if one would be better than the other or easier for a first timer. I couldn't be more happier with the choice I made. Decorating for this one was so easy with the reception theme. We wrapped empty boxes in wedding paper for the gift table. Bought some cheap garland and wedding stuff and favor boxes at the dollar store. Came up with alternative ideas for dinner menu (they give you ideas in the booklet but we went with something that would be easy to prepare). It was awesome. Everyone loved it and came in character and was laughing forever. Everyone agrees we are definately doing another!!! The booklets will guide you through your character throughout the meal.

TRUMP the Game Review

TRUMP the Game

So this isn't the greatest game in the world, but it isn't the worst either. My sister and I have had fun playing it the past couple days. Its a lot like Monopoly but is a lot shorter. It adds to the auction the classic "You're fired" from the Apprentice, which is fun to say to your opponent to get them out of the bidding. However, it does take a while to set up and the rules were confusing at first. I would advise buying it from Wal-Mart instead of on here, since I got the game for only $17.50 there.

Bid against your opponents to buy big-ticket properties like the Island Resort or Luxury Residence. Or you can use your Trump cards to strike profitable deals. Think another player would pay $50 million for one of your cards' Go for it! After all of the properties have been bought and all of the deals have been made, players count their cash. FFGGOT49 Kings of the Sea Expansion A Game of Thrones Card Game LCG by Fantasy Flight Games The Iron Fleet has gathered near the rugged and windswept Isle of Pyke. House Greyjoy means not only to claim independence for the Iron Isles, but to take the wrath of the sea to the shores of Westeros itself. To show its green-blooded nobles the power of salt and iron. To once more make them fear the sails of the Great Kraken. In the Kings of the Sea expansion, House Greyjoy makes its true mark on the A Game of Thrones The Card Game. This 60 card expansion provides the cards you will need to make House Greyjoy decks a reaving force to be feared. With them comes a wealth of new strategies, tactics, and deck-building options. A Game of Thrones: A Storm of Swords Expansion Review

A Game of Thrones: A Storm of Swords Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The third expansion to the Game of Thrones Board Game empire brings two things to the base game but still leaves something out. The most important element it leaves out is pieces to play the game with. You are required to have the main Game of Thrones set to play this expansion. For what its worth, the base set is worth having if you are a fan of strategy and military games like Risk and Diplomacy. That said, the things it does bring are fantastic!
Most importantly, this set brings a stand alone board that can be played with the pieces from the main set. The rules for the new board are the same as that of the main set with a few new additions. The board is focused on the riverlands of Westeros (the world the stories and game takes place) during the rainstorms that flooded the region in the novel of the same name. The storm marker changes the travel paths and adds a new dimension to the overall play as players are forced to adapt to routes that may be there one turn and gone the next.
The set introduces one new game mechanic in strategy cards that are selected and played during the opening phase of your turn. Strategy cards have a number of effects that range from one time claims to give you points towards your victory condition, forge alliances, rescue hostages, and more. The addition of strategy cards adds a dimension to the game that forces players to fight. The victory conditions set forth by the cards are often only resolved by some form of conflict (rescue mission, victory point cards, assault, etc).
This set also brings allies (played using the Tyrell pieces since the player set caps at four [Stark, Greyjoy, Lannister, and Barratheon]) to the fold. Alliances can be forged between the mercenaries, Frey, and Arryn by playing certain strategy cards during the opening phase of your turn. The prior set (A Clash of Kings) supplied generals that could take to the field. This set allows the generals to be captured and even executed. Once a general has been sentenced to die, their card is removed from the generals deck, reducing yout opponents combat effectiveness. Players also have the option of negotiating for their release or even staging a rescue mission via specific strategy card.
As with Clash of Kings, this set's components can be added to the base set (execution cards, new generals, alternate wildling deck, etc) in any combination, completely, or not at all. If this review were just on what it brings to the base game, the score would be half of what it is but since it comes with a completely new board game the score is what you see here. I strongly reccommend this set for fans of the game but, for those that have never played the original, you must still start there before playing this one.

Red November Review

Red November
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I played this game for the first time a few months ago, and enjoyed it so much that I bought it at a local game shop the next day. The game accommodates 2 to 8 players, and the game dynamics adjust along with the number of players.
As someone who enjoys Risk and Monopoly, this game appeared complicated at first, but after playing it became much more intuitive.
As opposed to most board games, where players compete to reach a specific goal, Red November requires all players to cooperate in escaping a doomed submarine. Over the course of the game, pressure in the sub rises, fires start, Krakens attack and floods fill various rooms. Players are equipped with tools that help them overcome the challenges and rescue friends in danger.
Reading through the rulebook might intimidate some players to start, but after playing through a few turns, the game mechanics become much more intuitive. Plus, if even one player has played before, he or she can help guide new players as everyone is working together.
The board itself is made of thick cardboard, the pieces are all well made, the instruction book is pretty clearly written, and the artwork throughout is unique and humorous.
Overall, the game is absolutely worth your time and money. If you are willing to invest a half-hour reading the rules and have a bit of patience when starting out, you will have an absolute blast.
Pros:
- Players work together to escape the submarine. This helps new players adjust easily and keeps every player interested across everybody's turn.
- The physical board and pieces are well-made and durable.
- Most games are over in less than an hour
Cons:
- May be a little bit intimidating to start.

Have you ever wondered what happens when you put Gnomes, submarines, grog, and a Kraken together? You will finally know the answer to this burning question inRed November! Red November, an original game by Bruno Faidutti and Jef Gontier, is a cooperative race against the clock. Players assume the role of gnomish adventurers trapped inside of a doomed submarine. As players move their gnomes around the board, more and more fires, floods, and reactor failures pop up all over the ship. To make matter's worse, there's a hungry kraken outside the porthole looking for an easy meal! Gnomes must extinguish the fires, pump out the flooded rooms, shut down the nuclear reactor and keep the submarine intact until help arrives. Players must guide their gnomes to tools capable of fixing the problem or have their gnomes down a bottle of grog to work up some liquid courage and avoid disaster! Red November is for 2-8 players, ages 12+ and takes about 1-2 hours to play. Red November contains: Gameboard, 8 Gnome cards, 8 Gnome pawns, event cards, item tiles, and rules.

Starfarers of Catan Review

Starfarers of Catan
Average Reviews:

I have loved Settlers of Catan since I first played it. I was thrilled when I first saw Starfarers (I loved the retro Flash Gordon look).
Unlike the other Settler games, this one actually uses plastic and not wood for many of the pieces/parts. My friends can be quite rowdy late at night but in the years I have had the game, no piece has ever broken.
Play is a little different than in other sets. Its sort of like Seafarers with lots of little islands. Development cards are there (although there are some new resources) and they have been joined by encounter cards where you deal with alien races, traders and pirates. Play lasts a little longer than the original but is comparable to Cities & Knights.
The board is beautiful and rather large (no small contained hex this time). Players ability to move and fight are modified by upgrades to their central ship/die roller/neat thing. There is currently an expansion set for adding up to two more players which I just picked up (so I don't know how it affects play yet).
All in all, this is a really fun addition to the Settlers world of games (I have eight of them so far). If you liked the original and wanted a bit more of a challenge, this is a great addition to your game closet.

My son and I really enjoyed playing Starfarers of Catan and were excited to find this 2-player version of the game. The game itself is similar to Starfarers and is not too long to play (around an hour). The rules are fairly easy to pick up, although we were glad to have the sample game to play through the first time. We were at a bit of a loss as to what to do with the Trade Goods, since we always seemed to have too many of them and decided to resurrect a rule from the original Starfarers game that allows players to trade in 2 Trade Goods for 1 of any other resource. Starfarers is still the better game but if you only have 2 players, Starship is a good substitute.

Axis & Allies Pacific Review

Axis and Allies Pacific
Average Reviews:

I've just completed playing one game with my 45 yr. old brother as the allies, and I have to say that I enjoyed the game. I used to play regular A&A quite often with him, so I think the test of wills was a fair comparison.
We learned early on, that it is critical to use CAP to slow enemies movements or to channel them into specific sea zones. If you play Japan, prepare to execute flawless turns, because the game is fairly unforgiving to mistakes on their part. Conserve your carriers! They are irreplacable.
At 75 IPCs, the industrial might of the US is truly impressive. Even after getting my clock cleaned on turns one and two (at the expense of the entire Japanese Eastern Pacific Fleet), I was still able to build 2 carriers, 2 destroyers, 2 transports, a sub and a marine! Japan can expect only to delay the US, not defeat them. A better strategy is to press the Aussies and Indians.
The game is better than vanilla A&A and the tactical possibilities are truly interesting because players tend to do a lot of unexpected things on every turn. Combat Air Patrol, US Marines, air and naval bases, submerging subs and destroyers added greatly to the pleasure of this game.
This one's a squid's dream, boys and girls and we will be playing it again I'm sure. Kudos to AH and Hasbro!

Axis & Allies Pacific is the second expansion to the Axis & Allies game system. In this game, three main powers (Britain, Japan, and the US) square off against each other against the backdrop of the Pacific ocean. Japan is trying to grow her empire, either through military might or by holding off the Allies long enough to consolidate her gains. The game adds a few new rules and a few new twists to the established A&A game system. Naval bases and air bases turn small, meaningless islands into vital strategic holdings. Convoy zones allow a single submarine pack to cripple an economy. The Chinese forces, while limited, are hard to crush. Japan gets her kamikazes, but will it be enough to hold off the vast economic power of the USA?

Catan Card Game Review

Catan Card Game
Average Reviews:

This is a wonderfully balanced card game. Too often games these days seem to encourage finding that one strategy or that one "card" or "position" that wins every time; this seems to be particularly true of video games. The Settlers of Catan card game seems to be relatively free of this. It is true that if you can "memorize" what cards are in what piles you can gain a kind of advantage. But there isn't a single card, or even set of cards, that gaurantee victory each and every time.
My friends and I played the Settlers of Catan and the Starfarers board games, and the associated expansions, for a couple of years before I decided to try the card game. I'm a gamer and I could never get my wife to play video games. But she took to this game immediately and we've expanded our collection to include the expansion and several other similar card games.
There are similarities to the Settlers of Catan board game, but there are alot of differences as well. The rules are relatively simple and easy to learn. If you've played any Mayfair game chances are you'll understand the rules pretty well after one game. If you are new to this type of game it might take a couple of trys to learn the rules.
The basic premise of the game is to build a principality and in the process be the first to reach 12 victory points. You can either chose to expand your principality by building more villages or by improving it with cities and associated buildings. Buildings and improvements are built by gathering the necessary resources of brick, wood, wool, and grain; gold serves a kind of commodity that you can trade for other resources. Various improvements e.g. fleets make trading for other resources more efficient or can even double your land production. Each games takes an hour or two to complete and *alot* of table space.

Expect the game to last a bit longer, obviously, and also a couple of rule changes. Because players collect resources at a greater rate between turns, the expansion pack rules allow a player to buy betweens turns, instead of just during a turn.
This makes things a bit more confusing, but once the adjustment is made, the game runs fine.
If you like the game, and want to add a person or two, the expansion is a must.

Blue Moon Review

Blue Moon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Blue Moon has slowly become one of my favorite games. It is easily both my favorite two player game and also my favorite card game. And I have a lot of games. It is the combination of depth, complexity and art that makes it so good. It creates a whole world. The Blue Moon world. I love it. If the odd ruleset, with the many special situations, keeps sending you back to the rulebook, persist. It is worth it.
Blue Moon has been compared to Magic: The Gathering. In play it feels different. Instead of a single long fight, you have a series of shorter ones. This means you can retreat from a fight (losing), but live on, hopefully with your strongest cards still to play. Another key difference is that you can play Blue Moon very well with factory decks. Each Vulca deck is the same. It has been play tested against all the other decks. You can build a custom deck also, but only according to rules that ensure balance. You may not have two identical cards in any deck, which I think is a good rule.
I particularly like the high production values for this card game. The cards are over-sized (the same size as many tarot decks), it comes with a board that organizes gameplay, three plastic dragons that function as scoring tokens, and a well printed and mercifully mistake-free rulebook. It also has a well designed box insert that holds everything in place. This is far above your typical card game and well worth the modest cost of the game. The game is also very good without any of the expansion decks. The two starter decks alone are fun to play for a long time.
The deck you choose gives you strategic direction, and the cards you draw give you tactical opportunities. This interplay of strategy and tactics is what makes the game far deeper and more re-playable than you would expect. The ludicrous fantasy theme and half naked babes give you.. fantasy and half naked babes! Of course if you find stuff like this obnoxious then this may not be your game. My girlfriend won't play this with me because of the art (she is missing out on a great game).
There has been much debate over whether the decks (each representing one of the various Blue Moon peoples) are balanced. They are. However it is clear that some decks are harder to play well than other decks. In the base set, for example, the Vulca seem stronger at first than their opponents, the Hoax. But, as you learn the decks you will find that the Hoax are a very good match for the Vulca. If all decks were easy to play, there would be no depth to the game. I still find that the two starter decks are one of my favorite match ups in the entire pantheon.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Blue Moon

Blue Moon is fast-paced and easy to learn. Each player plays with a 30-card deck, representing one of the factions vying for control of the three elemental dragons. Each card is oversized, allowing more space to show off the artistic detail. Each turn, the players battle for control of the dragons, playing characters or other helpful cards from their deck, and imbuing their characters with greater and greater power, in order to overwhelm their opponent and force a retreat. In the advanced game, players have the option of building their own deck, constructing a powerful multi-faction alliance. The basic set provides all the materials needed to play Blue Moon, including the races of the fiery VULCA and the clever HOAX, as well as a gorgeous game board, full-color rules, and three plastic dragon figures. This basic set can be expanded by the addition of any of the Peoples decks and the Emissaries and Inquisitors expansions.

Axis and Allies Battle of The Bulge Review

Axis and Allies Battle of The Bulge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hasbro/Avalon Hill has finally produced a game on this significant battle and much in line with the movie from 1966, this version features the rationing of supplies as a key part of the game. There are no Germans dressed as MP's, and the road signs do lead to Malmedy! The method of German victory is to acquire more territory than the actual historical results. The Allied player need only prevent the German conditions of victory. Game mechanics are slow, plodding and very hex concentrated with lots of tedious steps for each hex. In fact it may bore the average player. The dice roll situation is pure insanity! Especially when you have a lot of units in a hex and you have to roll twice, once for hits and another to see where they landed. This version therefore is recommended only for veteran grognards. Allied air power, which appears half- way through the battle were surprisingly ineffective. The initiative is important, as it can make a difference in the way a battle will pan out. However, with regard to Air activity, it is better for the Germans to place their aircraft after the allies, to keep them from destroying entire tank groups. You can offset this possible devestation by having artillery around but it seems that planes won't turn the tide before the Germans get their "24". If you are good at defense then the Allied army is for you. You can prevent Tank blitzkrieg's if you use your troops properly. One really interesting thing about this game is the surprising situations that can arise in individual hexes. You may get chances as a German to actually capture supplies (Colonel Hessler would be proud!) and sudden openings can appear that will let your tanks roll to the areas where the point values are for winning the game. The game is 8 turns long only, but don't let that fool you.It will take hours to play. Like Henry Fonda, play your hunches because like his character in the movie, you will know everything about the battlefield from your Bird's eye view. In the early part of the game, some Major Wolenski situations may result (the role played by Charles Bronson). As a General you will have to request your troops to hold positions, to cover your withdrawl against advancing German Panzers. Overall, it is OK but not fluid and only for the wargaming veteran.

German tanks thunder into the snow-covered Ardennes forest, opposed only by a few unsuspecting divisions of exhausted American troops. As Axis forces plunge into the countryside, Allied troops must struggle to hold the front line in order to repel the all-out offensive. Axis & Allies: Battle of the Bulge challenges you to control territory and contend with supply shortages, while directing infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft in one of the most decisive conflicts of World War II.
Detailed game components include a new truck piece, a hex-based game board with new original artwork, and original artwork commissioned exclusively for the Battle of the Bulge game box. Other elements of this new Axis & Allies variant include crucial elements that were key factors in the historical battle, such as supply shortages and late-battle air support, mechanics for overland vs. road movement and randomized casualties of war.

Axis & Allies depicts Wacht am Rhein (Watch on the Rhein), the German code name for this counter offensive that took place toward the end of World War II. The objective: to capture the port city of Antwerp. One player controls Germany, whose massive build-up of forces has gone undetected by the Allies and is poised to unleash all its fury on the Allies. The other player controls the forces of the United Kingdom and the United States and they must stem the tide of German armor and hold their positions until reinforcements arrive. Axis & Allies Battle of the Bulge is designed for two players and can be played in three to four hours. Measures 10.5" x 15.75" x 3".

Seafarers of Catan Review

Seafarers of Catan

If you're reading this, you no doubt are already a fan of Settlers of Catan. You're deliberating, trying to decide if you want to shell out more $ for this expansion. "Is it worth it?", you ask.
As one Settlers fan to another, allow me to encourage you. Yes, it is definitely worth it!
Seafarers adds additional water and land tiles, as well as an additional land type: Gold Field. Gold field works like every other resource, except that when the number comes up you get to pick *any* resource card.
The game also includes little ships, of four colors. These ships function just like roads, and can be joined to roads through a settlement. You use them to explore from the mainland of Catan in search of additional lands (and additional resources).
The rulebook contains several scenarios, accomadating 3 or 4 players. Some scenarios start with all lands revealed, other scenarios include an exploration element. In these scenarios, only the mainland is revealed: the surrounding seas and the other land tiles are placed face down. These are turned over when a ship reaches them, revealing either a sea, in which case exploration must continue, or a land, in which case the discovering player gets one card of that land's resource.
You can see that one of the best things about Settlers, the random board setup, is made even better by hiding the concealing the nature of the unexplored tiles.
My only complaint is that the rulebook, which contains diagrams of specific tile layouts for each scenario, is printed in such a way that it is hard to read. The text is understood easilly enough, but the board layouts are dark and indistinct.
But this complaint is minor, and with practice is easilly remedied. Seafarers is a terrific expansion that makes the already great game of Settlers even better.

Lord of the Rings Board Game Review

Lord of the Rings Board Game

When I saw only one review for this game--and a very bad review at that--I felt obligated to give my opinion so that people can make a more informed decision about purchasing this game.
Personally, I love this game and it stands out from my collection because of its co-operative game play. Instead of playing against each other, the object is to work together to beat the game (destroy the ring)--just like the Fellowship in the books/movies. In that way, it is great lesson in teamwork--for those of you interested in the educational aspect of this game (keep in mind that it's meant for ages 12 to Adult however, because of the complexity).
It's challenging in its normal game play and can be easily adjusted to further increase the difficulty. There have been many times that the game has defeated us--making victory that much more sweeter when we do win!
There are also expansion packs available for the game for when you're ready for something new. If you look at the reviews for some of the expansions (Friends & Foes, Sauron, & Battlefields), you'll see that a lot of other people really do love this game. I think it's the best game based on "The Lord of the Rings" yet.
