(More customer reviews)I purchased this Lego set for my 9 year old son. He had looked at it prior to Christmas, saw the price and said "I can only dream of getting something like that!". It was well worth every penny spent just to see his face when he opened it! Although it is recommended for 16 and up, at 9 he was able to put it together without only a little help from his older brother (age 19) and it was finished in about 6 hours total. I would recommend this for any young boy who loves Legos!

spectacularly detailed 3-story department store, designed in a realistic scale with lots of special building techniques and rare pieces. On the street outside, citizens carry shopping bags, send letters at the mailbox, admire the window mannequins, then cool off at the ice cream stand while a busy window washer works above. Enter through the revolving doors to discover a ground-floor clothing department, complete with a cash register, fitting room, hats, jewelry, perfume, and even a selection of spare trousers. A brick-built escalator carries customers to the second floor housewares department with glassware and golden plates for special occasions, and then it's up to the top floor for the toy department (complete with toy house and push-scooter) with an impressive chandelier above the open atrium. Up on the roof are a billboard and skylight!

LEGO? Creator Emerald Night Train (10194) Review

(More customer reviews)Which Lego train system is this? This is Lego's first engine and car for the new Power Function's (PF) train system. PF motors and infrared control devices are now common across a number of Lego product lines (e.g., Creator and Technic). If you have the old 9 volt system (which many Lego users were sorry to see discontinued) you can attempt a modification and place an old motor unit on this new train (others are doing this to varying degrees of elegance); axle width has not changed. If you have either of the RC train sets (7897 and 7898, which were brought out after 9 volt in 2006), those units have their own motor and infrared units (i.e., non-PF). PF and RC use the exact same track.
What do you need to run this train? This set does not come with any track or any of the motors or infrared receivers or control units. The track is currently (spring 2010) available in three sets: 7896 (straight and curved), 7895 (switches), and 8867 (flexible track). If these are not readily available on Amazon, check for them at Lego. The PF units are usually a little more difficult to source and the best selection is typically directly from Lego. The PF units required for this train are: 8882 (1 XL motor), 8884 (IR receiver), 8878 (battery), 8879 (remote control), 8887 (transformer for the battery). You can also add a light (8870). The cost of these accessories is usually more than the Emerald Night set itself. Also, the PF Motor Set #8293 is NOT designed for the Emerald Night; 8293 is designed to power a number of Technic sets.
Comments on the set: It is not much of a stretch to say that this is the most finely rendered steam engine that Lego has ever offered for sale. The engine it most closely approximates is a British Pacific Class A3. The set compares nicely to the best of the 9 volt era sets (e.g.: 10020 Sante Fe Super Chief, 10022 and 10025 Santa Fe passenger cars, 10133 BNSF, 10170 TTX, and 10183 Hobby Train). With the Emerald Night, Lego is introducing new driving wheels. If you look closely at them, you will notice that not all of the drivers have flanges (so called blind drivers); this allows the train to negotiate curves that would otherwise be too tight. When Lego announced the Emerald Night, they released a short video of the train's designer, Jamie Berard, discussing the set. I recommend that you find the video on the net as it will give you a better sense of the scale of the train and its novel features. As of late 2009, at least one Lego representative has stated that they will not be producing stand-alone passenger car sets for the Emerald Night.

(More customer reviews)This is a fun set to build and to play with. It will make a nice addition to many existing LEGO sets whether it is LEGO City or something else. It can also stand on its own.
It comes with a two-story bakery with a large display window. The display window is outfitted with many bakery wares that can be lit using the battery powered light that attaches in the ceiling of the bakery. There is a bakery store with a display counter, cash register and money.
Outside is a skating rink with two mini figs for skating. One comes ready with a camera for capturing the moment - like when another skater ends up feet in the air in a snowbank! The skating rink is outfitted with a bench for resting, lamp posts with a string of holiday lights (not actually lit).
There is a booth for purchasing your Christmas tree with a mini fig vendor. The horse and wagon will deliver your tree directly to your home thanks to the mini fig driver.

Record and Play (4095) Review

(More customer reviews)I have a ton of LEGOs, including a Mindstorm and a Spybot, so what's different about the Record & Play? The core of this set is the brick with two motors with integrated rotation sensors. Push the red button and push the robot through it's moves (up to 20 seconds). Then hit the green button to play it back. It plays back fairly accurately, although it is a bit jerky (it doesn't play the motors slow, but short bursts of fast). As a bonus, the tail end of the brick has a shaft input that does the same thing as pressing the play button every time the axle turns. This is useful for building something that has the motor block hidden inside, making the buttons hard to reach, or for making the 'bot respond to some stimulus (My next plan is for a passing LEGO train to flip a lever, causing the shaft to turn, which will trigger the playback to lower and then raise the crossing gates). There is an on-off switch on the bottom, and the robot will remember it's programming even when turned off, as well as an auto-shutoff if left alone for 10 minutes to save batteries.
Normal play mode runs through the actions once and stops. Hold down the play button for a couple seconds and it switches to mode 2, which repeatedly plays the commands forwards and backwards. Pretty cool. Do it again to get into mode 3, which repeatedly plays the commands forwards. This is very handy too.
The 192-page book shows how to build five models: a bug that hops along on two wheels and 2 legs, a dog with 3 wheels, a pen plotter, a 4 legged crab with claws, a standing-up walking robot, and a drummer. Much briefer instruction are shown for a dune buggy, a catamaran walking bug thing, tractor, a grabber, a block thrower, and a card dealer (and probably a few more).
The other pieces included in the set are fairly standard, a nice mix between Technic and standard bricks in pleasing tan and greens (lime and forest). The only really new piece is a right angle 1:1 gear box. Two are included in the set.
I like the fact that there is no real programming involved, no computer required, and it is very quick to get the bot moving. The kit has LEGO's usual excellent quality throughout.

Prepare to set sail! Load your ferry up with vehicles using the working back ramp and transport your cargo safely across the sea. Then use the geared lever to open the front doors and unload at your distant destination. Turn the gear to lower the ramp to drive the car onto the ferry then raise the ramp to set sail. It's a very nice model. If your really into trains this will go great in the train room (that's where mine is).This set is ideal for the collector, it has ALOT of detail.It's a very solid set also, nice and heavy. i'm sure the younger kids will like it to, its got big wheels so it will roll on the floor or carpet with ease...Hope this helps....Vaughn

My 8 year old and I had a couple of fun days putting it together (we haven't attempted to make the bridge or crane). Looks really neat and really visually appealing. Our problems 1) there was only ONE rubber band that came with the kit (!) and even that wasn't strong enough or provided enough tension to make the thing work. Without the proper rubber band, the motor runs, but nothing happens. We substitued our own rubber band 2) the cars bottoms fall off - it's fairly flimsy 3) when it's actually running, it's tricky to keep the wheels from scrapping against the sides of the frame, and when that happens, the wheel won't turn 4) mini figs can't fit in it -- Lego give you little tiny "pretend" people. Sort of disappointing.
Overall we give it a 2 (or 2 1/2).

Best done in good company; I would worry about someone -- particularly a 13 year old -- wanting to do this by themselves. It was a serious undertaking with seemingly thousands of parts -- all there thankfully. If you enjoy putting Ikea furniture together, you will love this kit. The plans are clear and intuitive; and the tools adequate (we added our own). Recommend using a white canvas drop cloth or sheet to work on; helps in organizing the various pieces and finding fallen nuts and bolts.

LEGO Creator Highway Transporter (6753) Review

(More customer reviews)I just bought this for my 23 year old self and this set has rekindled my past love of Lego. This set uses some Technic pieces and mostly Lego bricks, as opposed to some of the newer sets that use large, custom shaped pieces. The design is very detailed, and given the fact that there is more than 1200 pieces will provide someone with hours of fun building. But Wait There's More!The Highway Transporter set comes with instructions for 3, That's Right - THREE different instructions that utilize almost all of the pieces to build 3 completely different, but cool sets. The design of the Highway Transport also reminds me of some of the more classic Lego sets because it has such a high level of detail due to the use of many small bricks, but also durability due to the use of a Technic frame.
Since it is possible to build 3 different Lego sets with this one awesome product, I believe that this review deserves to address all 3 of the possible outcomes.
1. Tow Truck + car
The truck has a nice durable frame, good detail in the cab of the truck and a working lift in the back. The lifting crane extends outwards, changes angle and can pull the car up with the winch. The car is also fairly durable and well designed. Only complaint is that the front wheels of the truck do not turn, so the truck is doomed to only drive in straight lines. Overall a good choice for the first build, but I will be taking it apart to build the crane next - 4.5 stars!
2. Crane
The crane is probably the most impressive looking of the designs, but once built, actually feels like the cheapest. The boom arm is "extendable" by way of a push pin that locks it in place, but this feels lame in comparison to other lego cranes. Also the crane does rotate, but due to overly creative joint design it is very unstable and tilts off of the truck easily. The overall length of the crane truck is impressive, 5 wheels per side, but due to the lack of steering the truck only rolls forward and back. In its entirety the crane truck model is impressive to look at, but the functionality and mechanical design is severely limited. 3 Stars...
3. Truck with Trailer + 2 cars
The last model, the one on the box, is worth waiting for. Build the trailer truck last, as it is easily the coolest model of the 3 and you will be hard pressed to want to take this thing apart. The front truck has a good steering mechanism, detailed interior with removable roof for access, and a nice realistic look to it. The trailer is very sturdy, despite its thin looks, and is fully functional. The top ramp lowers to allow cars to drive up it, and the bottom ramp acts as a second brace to keep the top ramp up in place. The technic base of the models makes the truck and trailer very strong, but the brick exterior makes this model look so much better than comparable technic models. The cars fit the trailier nicely, but seem to be slightly oversized when compared to other Lego Creator cars. Overall, this design meets all of my expectations and was a blast to build. 5 Stars easily!--Overall Rating--

LEGO? Creator Monster Dino (4958) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this for my son's 6th birthday. Before it arrived, I was a *little* nervous that it was going to be a little too much for him. But his year-or-so of experience with Bionicles gave him the understanding he needed to build all three of the designs in this box. He required only a little guidance or correction to succeed. And the motor and remote control made this kit especially rewarding when he could see what he put together scurry around the room wirelessly.
The only cons that I see, and this would go for all Lego products today, is that they are much more 'constrained' in design than when I was a kid. Back then, one had to use his imagination to plan, build and enjoy. Today, the pieces go together one way and many kids (I assume) stop there. It takes some encouraging to get ours to "think outside the box".

Now that I'm 32 and can afford things, I've rediscovered my favorite childhood toy. I asked my wife for Legos for Christmas and she came through with this magnificent set. It's Christmas night and I'm already done. The design and detail are better than ever. Following the instructions and building it are just as much fun as I remember. Now I need to go to the storage area under the stairs and drag out my giant box of Legos that have lied dormant for 20 years and start building the rest of the town.
Basically, Legos are great for kids and they promote imagination. A lot of the architecture students I've talked to through the years were also avid Lego builders. In addition to learning how to follow a set of instructions, they also promote visualization and imagination and both are extremely important elements of any engineering or design career. So if you're looking for something safe and fun for your child that might just start them down a road toward a very fulfilling career, you just can't go wrong with Legos.

LEGO Offroad Power 5893 Review

One minor problem was very limited turn steering. Problem solved is removed 2 small squre block off then it can steering more tight than before. Rest of them is good.
