(More customer reviews)I received this for a Christmas present many years ago. My much older bro taught me the card version, and bought me the dice version many years ago. I LOOOVE this!
If you are the kind of person who enjoys doing games that involves sequences, even a tad poker-like, then THIS is the game for you! Instead of getting a flush for suites, you go for all colors in a sequence. A couple of sequences involves having so many numbers in order just like using 5 cards for a straight in poker. There are 3 of a kinds and four of a kinds. But there are times when you would need to make 3 of a kind PLUS a straight in the same turn. But think of it as wild poker, where duces are wild or you play with jokers or you decide on the wild cards because in Phase 10, be it dice OR cards, there are Wilds you can use to bail you out. The awesome alternative is, unlike the card game, you can do this on your own if you wanted to play by yourself bad enough because you have no one to do the game with. But UNLIKE poker, you have a set sequence you do, and you're STUCK until you complete the sequence.
If you are looking for a game for your kids, I would say this game can be played by upper elementary school age without adult or teen supervision. It would be complex for younger or maybe even middle elementary school age kids to do this without help.
And this is cheap enough, baby! :)

(More customer reviews)Phase 10 Twist is a LOT of fun and is my favorite variation of the game (I've tried them all). I like it because unlike the regular Phase 10 card game, everyone gets to advance even if they don't phase out on their hand (if you don't phase you move one space, if you do phase you move two spaces, and if you go out you move three spaces). So the longest you get stuck on a phase (besides the 10th one) is two turns. The twist is really fun too - it mixes up the game and keeps it interesting with ten new phases. If you don't make your phase when you're trying to "twist" you have to move back one space, but if you DO, you move forward double spaces. Sometimes regular Phase 10 can take a really long time (especially with a lot of people), but Phase 10 Twist keeps the game moving. I highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)I bought this here on amazon because none of the local stores carried the phase 10 cards by themselves. I should have just gone to a store a bit farther away. The tin is bulky and super hard to close after a while. The scorecards run out quickly if you play a lot. The only thing I really like about the set is the cardholder - it does make playing neater. Love the game, though.

(More customer reviews)I purchased 5 of these units for Christmas gifts in 2008 and every recipient absolutely loved it. I found that you need to play it several times to actually understand the little nuances that may be a bit different from how you actually play the card game. For example, the electronic game only allows a player to be skipped one time per phase, which differs from how my family and I always played the traditional card game. It also took me several hands to figure out how I would know if another play picked up my discard (the discard pile blinks a few times). All in all, these games were very well received and I have to admit, it is rather funny to visit my family now and typically see at least one person using the hand held game playing a quick game of Phase10. The game is sizeable enough to see the screen well (and it also has a feature to light up the display screen). But it also is small enough to fit in a coat pocket or purse very easily. The volume can be turned down or off and the brightness of the screen can be adjusted. You can select between 2 to 4 players. Another nice feature is that you can select the "quick" version that allows you to select how many phases you would like to play if you don't have time for all 10 phases. The game also appears fairly durable and although batteries need changed after a few months with heavy use (the screen will get light when this occurs), none of the recipients have had any problems. This game has been a great way to decompress for a few minutes at the end of a long day.

My family loves the original game, but the twists in this new version make the game more interesting, particularly for adults. You'd think the ability to choose which Phase to play for based on the cards dealt to you, would make it a piece of cake to complete the phase. No, no, no -- it doesn't. I'd recommend this game for anyone who likes the original Phase 10 or playing "rummy-style" card games.

(More customer reviews)Phase 10 is, simply, one of the best cards games there is. The rummy-like game-play never gets tiresome, the game is full of suspense and surprises... and, best of all, it's a challenging race to see who can beat Phase 10 first!
The game has 10 Phases. To get from one, you must complete the one before it. You start from #1, and, over a very exciting hour or so, you will get to Phase 10. But be careful! If you don't complete a phase, you will have to try again in the next round, and other people may catch up or leave you far behind! Or both!
To start, you are dealt 10 cards. There are 4 colored suits - red, green, blue, and yellow, just like Uno - each of which has the numbers 1-12. And then, like every great card game, there are wild cards! The wild cards represent any color or number that you need. Sounds simple? It gets complicated, believe me!
The phases don't necessarily get harder as you go. The hardest phase, in my opinion, #6, is simply... #6, not #10. But, this isn't a bad thing. Mixing tough phases with easier ones makes the game more exciting. It also helps people who are behind to catch up to other, more "advanced" players. All in all, the phases are fun, but if you get tired of them, try some new ones. Mine are, in this exact order:
Phase 11: 1 Set of 7
Phase 12: 3 Sets of 3
Phase 13: 4 Pairs in one color (wild cards must also be in this color). Players have a choice of interpreting this as either making all pairs be in the same color, or to match up same-color pairs in different suits. The latter is more enjoyable and fun, but the former is more difficult and challenging. To discard remaining cards in your hand, simply add on to one of the groups of existing pairs. After your hand is laid out, wild cards may be added on to any pair group.
Phase 14: 1 Set of 8
Phase 15: 10 Cards of one color
Phase 16: 2 Sets of 5
Phase 17: 1 Run of 10
Phase 18: 1 Set of 9
Phase 19: 1 Run of 10. Must be in one color
Phase 20: 1 Set of 10
Those phases are harder, and much more fun the regular ten. #20 is nearly impossible! They do get harder as you go, but there are easier ones in between the tough ones! Additionally, many of them, when completed, will immediately allow the player to advance to the next phase, as that player will be able to put down all of his cards.
So... what can you say about a card game that offers so many hours of fun... except that it's great? And Phase 10 is one of the best of its kind! A great gift at any time of the year!
