(More customer reviews)I was greatly surprised yesterday when my wife gave me my early Valentine's Day present and it turned out to be DC Direct's Deluxe Aquaman. Deluxe is the correct word here because the first thing I noticed was how big the box was. As others have noted this line is not a true 1:6 scale and if you have other figures that are, Aquaman will tower over them.
The box art is beautifully adorned with bright, aquatic blue colors. If you inspect the photos of the Aquaman figure on the box and compare them with the actual figure you'll notice some differences; the good news is the actual figure is better than the box art pics. I much prefer the material on the belt, shirt, and gloves on the figure than what was photographed from the prototype; a rare occurrence.
Aquaman comes with a base and stand, his trident, and an extra set of "bendy" hands to swap out with the closed fists he's packaged with. While the trident is a little on the fragile side, being made of a more delicate feeling plastic, it looks fantastic and exactly like the Alex Ross paintings of the character. You'll have to form the bendy hands into a closed fist for the figure to hold the trident, but be careful; it feels as though the wires inside could possibly puncture through the fingers.
The replaceable hands have been criticized by other reviewers on other figures from this line but I find Aquaman's to be in scale and very useful; plus they are very easy to switch back and forth. The stand is done in a matte black finish with "Aquaman" printed in a glossy black across the face; it is understated and attractively done and also does not distract from the figure which has plenty of dazzle all its own.
If you put Aquaman under a light he will practically explode in colors and light. The material used for his shirt evokes the "armor plating/goldfish shimmer" Alex Ross has always suggested in his work; it makes the figure appear very regal. The legging material also adds to the luminosity of the figure and offers a different kind of shimmer than the shirt.
If you're like me you'll be posing this guy very gingerly, the shirt material is a little restrictive and the last thing you want is to tear a seam. But this figure is quite poseable offering 28 points of articulation. It's very easy to get him into a fighting/swim pose if you use the stand to anchor him, although the stand isn't necessary to keep the figure upright as his leg joints are sturdy.
Finally there is the face sculpt which I feel is just about perfect. It is stoic without looking constipated. The hair has a nice wave on the right side that suggests flowing through the water. The ball jointed neck also allows a good range of motion.
This is by far one of my favorite figures and might possibly top the list. If I were to put him with my Sideshow and MEZCO figures he would clearly stand out. I highly recommend DC Direct's Deluxe Aquaman. It's the quality of figures like this that have gotten me out of the business of buying 6" mass market figures only to ebay them back out when a new line appears at Target. Save your pennies and go the deluxe route, they are far more satisfying.
