Aquaman 13" Deluxe Collector Figure Review

(More customer reviews)I was greatly surprised yesterday when my wife gave me my early Valentine's Day present and it turned out to be DC Direct's Deluxe Aquaman. Deluxe is the correct word here because the first thing I noticed was how big the box was. As others have noted this line is not a true 1:6 scale and if you have other figures that are, Aquaman will tower over them.
The box art is beautifully adorned with bright, aquatic blue colors. If you inspect the photos of the Aquaman figure on the box and compare them with the actual figure you'll notice some differences; the good news is the actual figure is better than the box art pics. I much prefer the material on the belt, shirt, and gloves on the figure than what was photographed from the prototype; a rare occurrence.
Aquaman comes with a base and stand, his trident, and an extra set of "bendy" hands to swap out with the closed fists he's packaged with. While the trident is a little on the fragile side, being made of a more delicate feeling plastic, it looks fantastic and exactly like the Alex Ross paintings of the character. You'll have to form the bendy hands into a closed fist for the figure to hold the trident, but be careful; it feels as though the wires inside could possibly puncture through the fingers.
The replaceable hands have been criticized by other reviewers on other figures from this line but I find Aquaman's to be in scale and very useful; plus they are very easy to switch back and forth. The stand is done in a matte black finish with "Aquaman" printed in a glossy black across the face; it is understated and attractively done and also does not distract from the figure which has plenty of dazzle all its own.
If you put Aquaman under a light he will practically explode in colors and light. The material used for his shirt evokes the "armor plating/goldfish shimmer" Alex Ross has always suggested in his work; it makes the figure appear very regal. The legging material also adds to the luminosity of the figure and offers a different kind of shimmer than the shirt.
If you're like me you'll be posing this guy very gingerly, the shirt material is a little restrictive and the last thing you want is to tear a seam. But this figure is quite poseable offering 28 points of articulation. It's very easy to get him into a fighting/swim pose if you use the stand to anchor him, although the stand isn't necessary to keep the figure upright as his leg joints are sturdy.
Finally there is the face sculpt which I feel is just about perfect. It is stoic without looking constipated. The hair has a nice wave on the right side that suggests flowing through the water. The ball jointed neck also allows a good range of motion.
This is by far one of my favorite figures and might possibly top the list. If I were to put him with my Sideshow and MEZCO figures he would clearly stand out. I highly recommend DC Direct's Deluxe Aquaman. It's the quality of figures like this that have gotten me out of the business of buying 6" mass market figures only to ebay them back out when a new line appears at Target. Save your pennies and go the deluxe route, they are far more satisfying.

DC Universe Classics Series 12 Action Figure Mary Batson White Outfit Variant Build Darkseid Piece Review

(More customer reviews)DC Universe Classics wave 12 (or you could call it the Darksied series) skewed a little more obscure than some past waves. They also have some updated packaging. This is Mary Batson A/K/A Mary Marvel and sister of Billy Batson A/K/A Captain Marvel. Like a lot of folks she was given great powers by the wizard Shazam and can transform back and forth from her super powered persona by invoking his name.
For Kids:
If you're trying to get your little girl to be a geek this may be a good starter figure. Can't really say the Marvel Family of characters are nearly as well known as other DC characters (Supes, Bats, WW I'm looking at you) but she's an attractive superheroic teen - that's got to count for something. She is of course smaller than other figures in this line as is appropriate but that does make her slightly more fragile, most notably in the arms.
For Adults:
If you scored Billy Batson (Shazam I think they called him on the package) and Black Adam from previous waves then she'll fit in well with the group. What they've delivered here is a confident young superheroine standing straight and proud. The hair and cape are made to look as if blowing to the left in a breeze. They've done an outstanding job on the flow and wrinkling of the material on her shirt and skirt. The face is attractive and the details on her cuffed boots and on the cape are done well.
What I have here is the white uniformed version. The other is red. The white is nice and uniform and the yellow lightning bolt and details look good. The yellow edging is not 100% consistent and the yellow rope is a touch clumpy but otherwise it's all good. Her hair is brown and eyes blue.
Articulation wise she's got, ball pin shoulders, pin elbows, cut wrists, cut waist, pin knees and ankles and cuts above the ankles. Due to the hair sculpt she can only turn her head slightly to the left. She seems to have ball hip joints that allow her legs to turn up top but all other hip movement is pretty much hampered by the skirt.
All the figures in this wave come with a little collector button, the kind you pin to your shirt, with little comic pictures loosely related to the figure. Her only other accessory is her piece of Darksied - the biggest piece - the torso.
I think they knocked the sculpt out of the park and the paint is very good and there are only minor quibbles with the articulation and she's a classic character that will look good in a Marvel Family / Shazam set.
The Collect and Connect, Darksied, is a welcome addition to all the Fourth World characters. He stands a fairly impressive 8 ?" tall. His craggy skin looks just a touch soft to me in comparison with an older (but smaller) version of the character I have but he still looks pretty good. There's good detail despite that and even the bottom of his feet contain all that Fourth World circuitry. He's just as articulated as his smaller counterparts and even has a couple of accessories. One, he's got a Mother Box he can hold in his hand and that also will attach to the back of his belt. Two, he has an interchangeable right hand, one in the regular blue glove posed to hold the Mother Box and an open menacing golden gloved hand covered in circuits and machinery. He's not as impressive as I'd like but still a very good figure who deserves 4 stars.

(More customer reviews)Okay so you get a blind box and aren't sure what you will find. The figures go together easily and the extra pieces make up the Batmobile. This is one of those things you get if you like the comics and are a collector. Not one for everyone, especially because you can't pick which character you are going to get.

These figures are blind-packaged, so, unless youa?TMre figure # 4, Superman, and have the necessary x-ray vision to cheat the system and put it to the man, youa?TMll have to take your chances just like any good soldier.#1 Batman, a more classic version of Batman, with the blunt ears, the high boots, the rib-lined, more batty cape he had in the old days.#2 This looks like the Hal Jordon Green Lantern in his test pilot jumpsuit receiving the ring from an ebbing Abin Sur. To Hal, Abin Sur is saying, a??I tried to eat a Twinkie, dear God, I wasna?TMt thinking. It was that Yellow Dye Number 5a?|a?#3 Captain Marvel, the guy who pummeled Superman pretty good in Kingdom Come---once Batman broke the captain out of his grinning idiot phase.#4 Superman, fighting little silver hotdogs with torpedo rotors. Only he can see what other figures are in what boxes.#5 The Flash is busting out of a photo album, and hea?TMs running. He doesna?TMt know where hea?TMs running, but hea?TMs happy about it either way.#6 Oh yeah, baby, the Joker. Hea?TMs got his a??banga? gun in hand, and whatever it is that hea?TMs doing, you know ita?TMs cool.#7 A classic style version of the Batmobile---both before and after the Penguin got his Red Triangle circus freaks to put a bomb underneath the floorboard.

(More customer reviews)This set is just too cool for words. They are sitting on my desk right now, in front of my computer, and I am marveling at their greatness.
The "Justice League Unlimited" series is doing a great job putting out some of the more-obscure figures, all done in the Bruce Timm influenced "animated"-style of the Justice League Unlimited TV series. Even though the Marvel Family never appeared on the show (which is a sad, sad oversight) they get rendered her in plastic glory giving us a taste of what might have been.
Most of the Marvel Family is here. Captain Marvel (called "Shazam" on the package), Mary Marvel (called "Mary Bromfield"), Black Adam (who is the only one that gets to retain his same name) and Shazam himself (called simply "The Wizard.") The only one missing is Captain Marvel Jr., which is a shame but it is cool to have the wizard Shazam making his first-ever appearance as an action figure.
The figures are on the 4.75" scale, slightly taller than the DC Universe Infinite Heroes Crisis Captain Marvel and about half the size of the DC Direct Marvel Family series. Because this is a set produced almost exclusively for collectors, there is not a lot of articulation on the figures. Captain Marvel and Black Adam have standard "Star Wars figure" articulation, with movable arms and legs. Mary and Shazam have only movable arms.
The sculpting on these figures is great, with each figure having a distinct face. Black Adam is more Egyptian than he appears at most times, with dark skin, a pronounced widow's peak and pointed ears. He has a cape, like he wore in the 52 series. Mary is the only one I have trouble standing. She is wearing high heels, which means it is a balancing act to get her to stay upright.
I would love to see a continuation of the Marvel Family in the "Justice League Unlimited" line, with Captain Marvel Jr. and maybe some more villains like Doctor Sivana and Mr. Atom.
