Excel Saga: Nishiki Ropponmatsu 1/8 PVC Figure Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased both this, and the special color edition. Ropponmatsu barely appears in the Excel Saga anime, but she's such a charmingly annoying character, and so cute, I had to have them.
The figure is very highly detailed, from the puckered around the knee stockings, to the eyes, (though the color of the eyes isn't quite right). The hair color on this particular version is supposed to be pink, and it is...at the very tips, but it's mostly white, so the color isn't quite accurate.
She doesn't quite 'hold' to her base well, so some care must be taking when displaying or she'll fall off. Same goes for the removable booster pack. If you have a cat as I do, be prepared to see it fall once in a while. Fortunately, the figure is well constructed and durable, with one small caveat.
The little cable that comes off the back of her 'cat ear' is poorly mounted. Both of mine came off their repective figures on the very first day I got them. I'd recommend having a tube of crazy glue handy to put them back on, as unless you put them in a closed display box, there's a big chance you'll also have yours break off. If I didn't know better, they weren't attached with anything more than 1mm of weak plastic, they cannot take any impact at all.
That said, since crazy glue fixed them stronger than the original, I'm not going to deduct much for this one weakness.
Overall, especially considering the price, this figure is a gem for anyone who thought Ropponmatsu Version 2 was a sweet character. And not a bad deal for anyone who just likes cute characters, this one's cute, and there's no denying that!

Revell Vexplorer Robotics System Review

(More customer reviews)The VEXplorer is a nifty little kit. Nice tires, better motors than VEX, and pre-assembled components. You can argue if the pre-packaged assemblies really allow students to "engineer" the machine; or if they just dumb-down the kit.
Regardless, where the kit is really lacking is the inability to do any programming. Without being able to program, this isn't a robot; it is a remote-controlled car. The kit is overly basic to make it a very effective teaching tool in high-school or middle-school. It may be good for elementary.
According to the folks at VEX, the motors are not interchangeable with the VEX kit (also a problem). The kit does come with some nice design software. However, the license is only good for six-months. Anyhow, so much of this kit is already built; there is very little left to design.
If you want a quickly-built remote control car for your kids, this kit is great! If you want something to use as a real teaching platform; this isn't the robot for you.

Kotobukiya Robocop Edition 209 Model Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I got this one as a gift and I must say that the first thing I thought when I saw it was "This is soo TINY!" and not in a bad way but out of amazement. You could never guess how small this model is by just looking at the photos because it has such a high level of detail that you could easily think it is a life-size ED 209 you're seeing. It has just the right amount of articulation points. the cannon 'arms' swivel up and down, the head-body twists and both legs swing back and forth to pose it as you like. the 'shoulder wings' are also articulated but they do not swing enough as to improve any pose, I would've rather have those articulation points on the knees or at least on the middle toes but it is nothing to cry about. The thing you MUST take into consideration is that if you plan to also buy KOTOBUKIYA ROBOCOP MODEL KIT,they will not look good together since they are not both made at the same scale. Robocop will tower over ED 209 so bad luck for those of us who wanted to re-enact the movie scene. That's the main reason why I haven't bought yet that KOTOBUKIYA ROBOCOP MK 2 MODEL KIT but I know I will nevertheless 'cause those three are officialy Clasic Hollywood Robots and no movie fan should miss the chance to own them.

(More customer reviews)i LOVED robocop 2 strictly because of this figure. i literally paused my vhs a million times just to draw it. i searched everywhere for the toy as a kid (i only found the ed-209 to my dismay...the small ed, not the beautiful massive one that hot toys make/made) and i had no such luck. now i run into this figure and i ordered it right away.
now the only flaw this has is its very small...yea, i read the specs but wow. i was a bit sad when i got the ultra light box in the mail. but hey, its robocop 2, man...i dont have to blow the dust off my tape to draw it now :) awsome figure, not the less!

The only bad thing is that it only comes with the hands, wings and the stand. If you want the heads, Longinus spear and the dummy plug, you should get the other one. Nontheless is awesome.

WoWWEe Alive Elvis Review

(More customer reviews)One day when searching for WowWee Alive Lion Cub Plush Robotic Toy in Tan, I came across this Elvis robot. The price was reduced to [...], so I impulsively bought it.
For [...] it's an interesting thing to have. We like Elvis in our house, but we aren't wild Elvis fans (although I did drag my husband to Graceland while we were driving through Memphis). Sometimes we listen to him, but, again, we aren't collectors and we only own one greatest hits album.
Anyways, if you're an Elvis fan, you might really want this. If you're interested in robotics, you might really want this, too. Otherwise, I can't see the point in owning this thing-- unless you get it for thirty dollars, as I did. And, even for thirty, I really don't know what to do with this. After the initial novelty wears off (quickly), there's not much to do except put it in your Elvis shrine, which we don't have.
Elvis' remote control is shaped like a microphone and works very well. He has several different modes-- singing, talking, moving, not moving, and karaoke mode. He sings eight different songs and runs through two or three monologues-- clips of interviews he's done. He also has an interactive mode where he can follow your movements with his eyes and make some quips in response to your presence. He sounds an awful lot like the real Elvis, but doesn't exactly look like the real Elvis. Adding a pair of Retro Silver / Gold Elvis Presley Party Sunglasses adds to his look and, since I had a similar pair of sunglasses, that's what I did.
He comes with one cartridge, and that cartridge is needed to have him work. Make sure yours also comes with the cartridge. Mine was included in the shipping box, but not in the Elvis box itself. So, I'm not sure it's included with every purchase. It says cartridge 1 on it, and I haven't seen anymore cartridges for sale. I'm not sure there are any more for sale or that there have ever been any others for sale.
Elvis' movements are pretty fluid, although you can hear the mechanisms moving while he moves. He has the lip sneer going, he moves his neck side to side and slightly up and down. He moves his eyes, and he is fairly expressive. His hair is not easy to style (though, admittedly, I didn't really try except for brushing it), and my robot arrived with a plastic band to hold the hair in place in the box. When I removed this plastic band, his hair had a seemingly-permanent bend in it. I suppose I could use some Brylcreem Hair Cream, Blue - 2.5 Oz on him, but I doubt that's recommended. ;)
Anyways, I'm satisfied with this purchase because I know I got a deal-- although it isn't something I had thought I wanted. My 12 year old son is interested in robotics, however, so I think he'll really like him and if he eventually wants to take him apart, I'd be okay with that, too.
He takes batteries, but also comes with a convenient ac adapter and responds well to his remote.

(More customer reviews)I had a "Robert the Robot" as a kid and enjoyed driving it around with the controller. This reproduction is a fairly accurate copy and has a lot of play value. The only change is that the robot voice is now electronic...the original toy had a record disk inside. It would have been wonderful to duplicate that aspect as well but only a purist would be disappointed with this toy. This reproduction would be a nice addition to your robot collection!

WowWee Robotics Roboquad Review

(More customer reviews)I like watching it so much that I haven't even opened it up yet. Regardless, I'm already looking at ways to mod it or control it differently. I guess that's why the "educational value" is five stars.
It has five control modes: demo, remote, program, guard, and autonomous. Demo is pretty good for when someone asks what it is or does. You'll see it more than you ever intended. Remote control is OK cause you can see how it moves on different surfaces and stuff. Program mode lets you, basically, create your own demo.
As with roboraptor, I use guard mode most. It's best for making people jump. A low awareness setting and placement near trafficked areas is efficient. High awareness is also nice because it seems to wake up every now and then. I wish I could make it scuttle away and then actively hide, but can't. It seems to wake from guard into either autonomous or runs a program. Programs can't send it to autonomous or guard. Oh well.
Autonomous mode is for having it do stuff until the battery runs out. Mostly, I like to watch it play with a roomba. Having roboquad interact with roboraptor is OK for a while, but it isn't really more interesting than a bag of furbies. I wish they could fight. Really fight.
Anyways, when autonomous or guarding, roboquad's "personality settings" help determine what it does. These settings are aggression, awareness, and activity. Awareness is basically sensor sensitivity. Activity seems to be the balance knob between scanning and moving. Aggression helps determine how it reacts when it notices stuff. I wish I could program in some reactions.
Overall, I think roboquad is worth the money. I'll probably end up with a few, but don't know if I can use the remote on one without another listening in. I wish I could program it to enter guard or autonomous mode for a time period. Then it could play sentry by marching around, guarding, etc. I also wish it had a charging cradle like my old aibo.

Liven up your living room with the Roboquad, a four-legged, spider-like robot with unprecedented mobility and awareness. The Roboquad is designed with advanced sensory awareness, helping it react quickly to the surrounding environment and pursue a moving object in any direction, including forward, backwards, and sideways. When an object such as a cat or a remote control car passes, the robot's head swivels around so it can monitor its environment without moving. After it sweeps the room with a tightly focused infrared beam, it makes rapid decisions about how to react to its environment. Once it identifies the object--the sensitive infrared detector can see objects as far as 13 feet away while also identifying their size and spatial details--the Roboquad heads out in one of three speeds, navigating through doorways and detecting table edges in the process. Your cat will meow in amazement, as will your guests.
The robot offers five scanning sequences: a Smart Scan, which examines the surroundings and then reacts if anything changes; Scan Left and Scan Right, where the robot turns and faces any object within a 3-foot range; Approach Nearest Object, during which the robot looks left and right while ramping up the scanning range, and then moves toward the closest object found; Escape Walk, where the robot selects the largest open space and moves toward it; and Flinch Response, which helps the robot respond to quickly approaching objects. In addition, many of the Roboquad's decisions are based on its three controllable personality settings, one each for awareness, activity, and aggression. A more aggressive Roboquad will react quicker to approaching objects than a mellower Roboquad, for example.
The robotic arthropod offers more than just movement, however, with multicolored flashing lights and techno sound effects. The Roboquad also boasts four usage modes: Direct Control, Autonomous, Guard, and Sleep. Direct Control mode invites you to control the robot's direction, style of walking (such as crab walk, stomp walk, or rotation walking), and head movements, while in Autonomous mode, the robot interacts with his environment as he moves through it. Guard and Sleep modes, meanwhile, are designed for downtime. In the former, the Roboquad visually scans the environment and stays alert for noises, then scares off intruders with a series of crazy sound effects. In the latter, the robot automatically falls asleep after five minutes of inactivity and then powers down after 24 hours.
The robot owes its imaginative movements to its agile rotating legs and articulated neck, all of which respond to the machine's advanced artificial intelligence. And watch out when the Roboquad feels like getting down, as the machine includes a built-in dance demo along with a more traditional movement demo. Other details include 72 preprogrammed functions, up to 40 programmable moves, a built-in light sensor that reacts differently based on the ambient light, and a four-layer, full-function remote control. The Roboquad, which is designed for children ages eight and older, requires four C and three AAA batteries (not included) and measures 8.5 by 9 by 12.5 inches (W x H x D). It's also backed by a 90-day warranty.

(More customer reviews)OK, I usually don't do this whole review thing, but I couldn't pass on this one. It's a big price tag heading under many Christmas trees this year. My son pooled all of his recent birthday money and toy savings to buy an N.S.E.C.T. I will start with a positive. The walking feature and tank like controls are very cool. The N.S.E.C.T.'s legs can be controlled independently giving it the ability to turn around in place and is quite fun to drive. That said, the is a lot that can go wrong with a toy like this and we are returning our second today and calling it quits on the whole idea.
Our first N.S.E.C.T. would not fire at all despite the loud clacking noise it made when trying. Our second will actually launch darts in the 3 to 5 foot range (just shy of the 25 feet listed) with a similar loud clacking. Both have had difficulties with raising and lowering the missile launcher. The ridges on the wings seem to catch the edge of the launcher every once and awhile.
This is a complicated piece of machinery with loads of moving parts to give out. Unfortunately, ours won't be staying around long enough to comment on the durability. Beware that it is also loud and cannot walk on hard floors.
If this toy is destine to find its way under your Christmas tree, I would recommend pre-charging the battery (it needs a 5.5 hour charge to start). It is very easy to remove without disturbing much of the packaging. Just open the back of the package and slide the inside structure out. The battery and charger are on the underside.

(More customer reviews)First, let me say that this is a really cool toy! I bought it for my 6 year old son for this year's annual winter present giving orgy. It is great looking and lots of fun to put together. Just the right amount of challenge for a kid his age. It seems to be durable and I expect it will last longer than the average plastic RC car.
The reason I didn't give this thing 5 stars is because it seems under-powered. The wheels are a good size and give it the ability to cruise around on a lot of varied terrain without getting hung up, however, it is limited by the power of the motor. It doesn't really need to be any faster but it definitely needs more torque to get it to go everywhere it looks like it should be able to go.
The reason I said it doesn't go far enough is because the imaginative creating and building aspect we expect from LEGO is somewhat limited. You can take the parts off and move them around a bit but the possibilities for true customization are pretty limited. I was really hoping that it would be able to integrate with traditional or Technics LEGO pieces to really open up the options but unfortunately you're pretty much stuck with the pieces that come in the box. Even offering additional body kits that could be mixed and matched on the chassis would be cool.
