(More customer reviews)The premise of this game is simple: you and your opponent each have 15 spheres, and you are working to build a pyramid together, one move at a time. To win, you want your opponent to use his/her spheres before you use yours, so that you can place the last sphere on the top.
But rather than just continually taking from your reserve of spheres, you want to make moves that either allow you to move a sphere from one place on the board to another, or another move that actually lets you take one or two spheres back. At the same time, you don't want to let your opponent have these openings.
(A sphere can be moved within the board if it goes 'upstairs', that is, on top of the center of a 2x2 of spheres. You can take one or two of your spheres back when you make a 2x2 where all four spheres are your own color. You could almost imagine yourself using similar strategies as you use when playing the 'box' game on paper. As you avoid some situations, you will find yourself trying to put your opponent in dilemmas where whatever they do will leave you an opening.)
So the principles are easy. However, I also think that the game situations are somewhat limited as a result, and while this is a great way to spend 10-20 minutes, it won't be as interesting as other games.
This is a very good game for children who are good at seeing visual relationships; I would expect that any child that enjoys Othello will also enjoy this.

Two players are given 15 marbles each. They take turns to make a pyramid. Simple rules allow them to save their marbles. The winner is the player who saves the most marbles and is thus the last to complete the pyramid.

(More customer reviews)The rough spots on the solid wood blocks and frame can be sanded smooth easily to a high gloss finish but the bottom is only 3 ply plywood. A felt pad protects the base; I hope the glue holds out over years of play. Made in China. You should have two sets to facilitate the different start positions of the various puzzles and you can then then creatively construct your own. Some have already started their own websites dedicated to proving various "over 80 move solutions," but I demonstrated a 61 mover. Different hardware/software are programmed with different 'move' definitions apparently...

(More customer reviews)"Cathedral" is a simple game to learn and one that will be quickly picked up by anyone who tries it.
The idea is to take over as much territory within a medieval town's walls as possible. You do this by placing your various buildings in strategic places within the playing area.
The game itself is made from wood, and the pieces are quite a good size. As such, they are durable and will last ages before any wear and tear begins to show.
I personally found myself quickly becoming bored with the game, as it does not seem to have the endless variety that a game such as chess can provide. The relative movements and strategies you can develop are fairly limited, in that sense.
However, "Cathedral" is different and it is simple. If there are only two players, it makes a quick, fast game to fill a few minutes with. However, should your inclincations be toward longer, more in-depth games, this is not the best of them.

The simplicity of rules combined with nuances of strategy made it the favorite of my family. All ages could play one another, and as sports commentators so often say, "On any Sunday, any player could beat any other player." So I was delighted to find a travel-size set to go on vacations without risking raising the wrath of the trunk space regulator. In twenty-five years no one has tired of the game. And I love the fact that it doesn't require any batteries!
