He's 10 and took only a couple rounds for him to "get it" - we play other strategy and logic games and this one is fresh and fun. It's a good travel game too when you don't want loose pieces like in battleship or chess.

(More customer reviews)I've had the original Mastermind for about 30 years, and it's a great way to hone logic skills. My 5-year-old recently got Mastermind for Kids as a gift, and I was disappointed. I guess it's "cute" to make the game look like a bowl of Lucky Charms or something, but in the kids' version there are NO PEGS - the pieces get scattered everywhere, ruining the game, with one false move. Tedious and very frustrating, especially for little ones. The kids' version is a bit simpler as it allows for only three combinations, not four like the original; BUT you can just as easily decide to do the same with the original version anyway. GET THE ORIGINAL, IT's GREAT!

(More customer reviews)Travel Mastermind is like original Mastermind, but it is smaller and has a better format for storage because it has a lid which snaps shut to keep the pegs from getting lost. It still only rates a 4 for durability because of all the small pegs--keep them away from the wee ones because the pegs are definitely a choking hazard. I prefer this to the original Mastermind because it is smaller and has the snapping lid. Beware if you take it on vacation--look under the beds and couch before you depart to catch all the stray pieces.
This travel format is a great investment for an elementary school classroom to be played during "free" time or on rainy days.
If you like Mastermind, try Advanced Mastermind which has more colors of pegs to be more challenging.
My daughter, age 7, learned Mastermind on vacation last summer and mastered the game. For Christmas she received Advanced Mastermind and has been playing steadily with her father. I have seen great improvements in her logical thinking skills both as she plays the game and in real life situations. We often have games that start on one day and continue the next.

(More customer reviews)Both the code pegs and the key pegs are really small and difficult to grasp. This may be the case with the "full-sized" version as well; it has been 30 years since I played that one, so I can't say. The size of the pegs aside, the game case itself is built flimsily. The pegs do not stay in place because the compartment doors do not stay closed, so we're always fishing the little tiny pegs out of the inaccessible corners of the canvas case. And when we unzip the case, the pegs go flying around. Not practical when traveling. I will say that I had (excessively?) high expectations for the game, because we love, love, love our attache Yahtzee!!
As for the game of Mastermind, it is awesome. My six-year-old loves to play. Hidden analytical skills come to light, Scooby Doo is forgotten for a while, we both have fun together.
Recommended buy, probably better in another design.

(More customer reviews)This is the Mastermind game they used to sell, and the one I learned to play as a child. The newer four-peg version is definitely easier, but doesn't provide the deep satisfaction of winning a five-peg game. Adults will find the outcome of this version less predictable. Children may find it frustrating, but it will definitely teach them to think. I don't know if they've changed the packaging design, but the pegs and markers used to be far too easy to lose and not portable at all -- my only criticism of the game, and thus the three-star durability rating.
