(More customer reviews)UPDATE! With no notice from Leap Frog, The Fly Fusion Pentop Computer has been DISCONTINUED and they are no longer making the ink cartridges or the paper necessary to use it. When I asked customer service for alternatives I was advised "there aren't any."
What can you say about an ink refill, except that it works as good as the original. No problems with it. I got the Fly Fusion for my daughter to use in high school, but I carried it with me in Mexico to translate menus, store items, etc. Really an excellent product.

(More customer reviews)When I say Fly Fusion is fun, I mean...it could be. It could be fun if I could even remotely interest my 15 yo dd or my 10 yo dd. Neither daughter has any interest in it at all but I have played around with it. It comes with very basic software so if you want to use it for more than just writing in the journal, you have to buy more software. After finally succeeding in getting through to the store, I decided that buying the subscription pass would be worth it for the time being. I bought the pass and began downloading some of the files. It takes forever on DSL to download and sync. The pen has 64 mb free so you have to pick which ones you want on your pen at that time and leave the others on your computer. Sometimes the files fail to upload and show on your pen and then later they will but only after syncing again and losing some other file programs. I am no noob, it is just buggy. The technology is there; I just wish for the kind of money that they are asking for this pen, they would use it to upgrade the store.

(More customer reviews)I was DESPERATE for a birthday present for my hard to buy 11 year old son! Hated to spend this kind of money on a present before Christmas but I was afraid he was tired of getting the usual LEGO'S, Video games...etc! I purchased this knowing NOTHING about it. The store clerk said, "we sell alot and never get any back!" The day before his birthday, I took a chance and purchased this. IT WAS NOT A MISTAKE!
The unit is a PEN that actually writes. You MUST have the special paper which is 9.99 per notebook. Caution your children that this paper is for the Fly Pen use ONLY!
The pen works with a AAA battery. I did not purchase the charger. You will want the speaker though.
This package gives you everything you need to familiarize yourself with the product but buy another notebook and a speaker!
You will want to open this one early and spend some time familiarizing yourself with it before giving it to your child. The functions take practice and patience! DO Purchase a Fly Notebook and practice with this so you can start your child off correctly. I did this so I did not have to mess with the "start-up" kit that comes with this package. With practice and patience, I found this to be easy to figure out..and I DO NOT consider myself to be a technology buff. We busy moms like things quick and easy!
You turn the pen on, and touch the point on the icons that are on the bottom of the (fly notebook) sheets of paper...(these notebooks are sold separately). The pen will give you menu options, similiar to "phone menu choices". YOu select your choice by touching the icon. It pretty much guides you through the process. It will ask you to write letters, (usually the initials of what you want to play) and circle them. For example "Fly Tones" you write FT and circle it. It will guide you through the process of drawing your keyboard. "draw nine vertical lines", "connect them at the bottom", for example.
This DOES take practice and patience. My 11 year old has spent quite a bit of time with the instruction manual and the pen attempting to "figure it out." He is that kind of kid though. My soon to be 8 year old wants one for Christmas and I will have to help him learn to use it.
This is Certainly NOT a toy and is NOT an out of the box and instant fun thing. I can see it having quality educational value over time. I have purchased the spelling and math packs (29.99 a pop..WHEW...) and will review them when they are opened. So far, this pack has been enough.
This comes with earbuds and a small plastic case.
This package with a AAA battery, the additional speaker, a notebook, patience, practice, and time are all you need to get started with the Fly Pen.
I recommend it despite the "priceyness" of the actual unit AND the accessories because as with MOST "Leap Learning" tools, their abilities are far beyond what the item exposes with the first couple of uses. Like most parents, I have never been disappointed with this company's products. I am amazed at this product's abilities with my and my sons limited exposure to it over this past weekend.
Finally, I LOVE how this FORCES you to write neatly AND follow-directions! This is perfect for those middle school children who are still in "primary-land" as far as their writing skills are concerned.

You just write out the project, and its really cool. I recomend it if your having trouble in ANY subject, and they're good price.

FLY Fusion? Harry Potter Marauder's Map Review

(More customer reviews)I bought two of these at once -- one for my teen daughter and one for myself. With the exception of the glossy paper it is printed on, it looks identical to the Marauder's Map in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie (even with the cool vertical fold-out center section). It does have the red Fly logo placed discreetly on the lower front of the map...it looks like a wax candle seal, and doesn't look too out-of-place. And there are places in between a few folds of the map that have areas for the game playing aspect of this map. And the whole back of the map has games and instructions printed on it. We bought it just to have a realistic Marauder's Map..and we are 100% happy. (We don't have the FLY computer pen to play the game, so we can't comment on that aspect of the item). Both my daughter and I just love it as a wonderful momento from the movie and book... and we both pull it out and look at it often... it's very realistic!

FLY Fusion? Journal Review

(More customer reviews)Seeing as I wrote a review for the original Fly journal I wanted to do one for the new Fly Fusion journal. I was extremely pleased to discover that the new journal is a much better product than the old.
The journal itself is very nice, the sort you would expect to find in a bookstore in the nice blank notebooks section. It is hardcover with an elastic strap to hold it closed when you aren't using it. The entire thing is filled with interactive Fly paper so you can write in your journal and then upload to your computer (a HUGE improvement over the original with just that) in changing colors. The cover is blue and green with red metallic birds. Built into the journal is a sheet with categories for writing prompts that you can tap. There is a wide variety of these with some good ideas if you're into those. Obviously they are geared more toward a younger audience, but would be an excellent educational tool for writing and journal-keeping for kids. The ability to encode your writing using the Fly pen is also back and works nicely.
The journal is still geared towards girls but this new one is /much/ less overpoweringly girl-oriented compared to the first. Almost all of the writing prompts work for boys now too: Money, Friends, Music, Books, etc. The possible exceptions are Love Struck and Crush being more stereotypically girl-journal specific. The prompts are much more interactive now, sometimes asking yes and no questions before getting to the final question to write about.
I am an adult with a Fly pen and find this journal much more convenient for carrying around than one of the large notebooks of Fly paper. Leapfrog even sells replacement journals so you don't have to buy the software again to get another. It is also the sort of journal I would have purchased if I saw it in a store, Fly pen related or not. Congrats to Leapfrog for improving this product so much!
