(More customer reviews)The Series 25 Captain America v. 2 and Red Skull sets a new standard for Minimates. As opposed to some of the earlier releases that skimped on extras (like Waves 10 and 11), there's a lot of goodness in this little box. First is the "new" Captain America, AKA The Winter Soldier AKA Bucky Barnes. Marvel finally decided to break one of their cardinal rules (Bucky will never be resurrected) and so we get the new Cap. The figure is well-sculpted, with a stern look on James Barnes' face and a separate hairpiece (the Tony Stark Iron Man 2 hairpiece in brown). The mask is a slip-on full head piece with an angry Cap face painted on. The helmet slips on and off rather easily, definitely an improvement over the earlier waves, which had issues with the helmets being too small for the heads, making it nearly impossible to get the helmets off since the whole head would eventually come off when trying to remove it. Cap also comes with his trusty shield, handed down from the Steve Rogers Cap, and it's the same Cap shield from the early waves (save for a lighter blue center). A slip-on piece with a tab is provided so that Cap can carry his shield on his arm, and a harness is also provided so that Cap can carry the shield on his back. Being a new and grittier cap, he also comes with a gun and a knife. A nice touch is the metallic blue paint used for the costume; as opposed to Rogers' uniform, which was made of chain mail, the new Cap's uniform is comprised of a Kevlar/Nomex blend, which in the comics is represented with a shiny, metallic finish. The reproduction on the Minimate gives it a similar shiny finish and makes it look very sharp. This is probably the best Cap since the original version, way back in Wave 5.
Next up is the Red Skull, a character who has seemingly been around since the beginning of time. For those of you who follow Ed Brubaker's fantastic Captain America comic, this is the Alexander Lukin version of the Skull, and he also comes with all sorts of goodies. First is the head sculpt. It's very similar to the original Skull figure from the Villains box set, only with a closed mouth as opposed to the original's open-mouth grin. Where this one blows the old one away is in the accessories. As opposed to the first Skull, who only came painted in his green Hydra-inspired uniform, this one comes dressed in a removable black waistcoat to give him that retro WWII look. The coat has a holster attached to it so that the Skull can carry his gun (although why they chose to give him the futuristic Battlestar Galactica gun as opposed to a normal handgun is beyond me). Befitting his Lukin identity, the Skull also comes with a separate jacket and tie, to give him that evil businessman look. Underneath he is painted all black, for basically a cheap, third all-black bodysuit look (not unlike his all green Hydra look). Definitely a fitting enemy for Captain America.
The only issue I have is with the price that the retailer is offering this for: $59.99?!?!?!? Oh hell no. Look around and I guarantee that you can find it WAY cheaper (I know I did). And when you do, you'll see that it's a welcome addition to your Avengers' Minimates and easily the two best Minimates from Wave 25.
