(More customer reviews)Wave 29 continues with a two pack of T'Challa, the Black Panther and Storm in her 90's incarnation. At first glance that seems like an odd pairing until you realize that in current Marvel continuity (which is subject to change from day-to-day) T'Challa and Storm are married. The Black Panther figure is a fairly good representation, with a removable cape and regal gold wristbands. The Panther helmet is removable revealing a well-done representation of T'Challa. A separate hairpiece is provided to complete the T'Challa look. Once you remove the wristbands and cape, however, THAT'S when you get the Black Panther. The helmet fits well on the head and is easily removable, but the eyes on the mask seem set a wee bit too wide apart from each other and the ears don't line up properly. At first I thought that maybe it was a problem with this one particular figure, but every other Panther figure I've seen seems to have the same issues. Additionally, the front of the mask just doesn't look like the Panther. You'd figure with a mask that's predominantly black you couldn't screw it up, but they did. There's not much to write home about the outfit since it's molded all in black, but there's some nice boot detail reminiscent of the comic book Panther. A plain set of hands is included, although why a clawed set was not provided considering one of the Panther's main weapons is his clawed gloves is beyond me. Major disappointment right there.
The Storm figure is done up in her 1990's Jim Lee outfit. Let me start off by saying: it is a home run. From the hair and cape down to the puffed-out sleeves, she is the comic-book sculpted perfectly in 2-inch plastic. Additionally, the paint job has a pearlescent white sheen that just gives it a nice "WOW!" factor. The only thing that gets me is that, when you look closely at the figure, you realize what a patently absurd design the costume was. With the poofy hair and billowing cape and sleeves, Storm looks like she's ready to dance the night away at Maisonette 9 to some Donna Summer tunes. But that's a minor nit; as a representation of the comic book, it doesn't get any better than this. Included are a couple of lightning bolts that you can slap on her hands to complete the look.
Both figures are well done, and while I understand the logic of including them together, it would have made more sense to include Storm in Wave 34, which had 4 X-Men figures in their 90's incarnations. With the dozens of Wolverines floating around out there, they could have just as easily slapped "90's Wolverine" on one of them and packaged Storm with it. Similarly, why wasn't Black Panther included in Wave 16, which was strictly an Avengers' subset? I understand that Loki and Thor go together like ham and eggs, but why not Panther and Thor and make Loki the chase variant? In any case, no claws for the Panther and the goofy helmet prevent this from being a 5-Star set, but it's about as close as you can get.
