We've cracked open geodes before at our local rock shop and thought that the crystals inside these ones were way nicer then any others we've opened. Our geodes had calcite, quartz, and even a little bit of purple amethyst inside. Tons of fun and a great addition to my son's rock collection. Family approved!

Model T Kit Rock Tumbler Review

(More customer reviews)The Model T seems functional enough, but the smaller motor on the Model T concerns me. I bought in a hurry and should have considered the time necessary to tumble a batch of rocks. The larger motor and the dual barrels of the AR-2 would have better suited my needs, but for a first tumbler the Model T is great. If you intend to keep the original shape of your rocks then you may want to seriously investigate a vibrating polisher. The loss of edge using a tumbler is not to dramatic, but it does round off the edges on crushed or broken rocks. Rock tumbling is an exercise in patience! If you are not willing to wait then try another hobby. Overall I am quite pleased with the Model T, but I think I would have been happier with the AR-2. A couple of other notes: we have experienced minor leak problems with the barrel on the Model T, but I am not entirely convinced that it was not operator error. Keep it in a pan or cookie sheet just in case. For those concerned about noise, I could sleep in the same room with my Model T (for that matter I have dozed off in the chair in the room with it). The rubber barrel and use of water in the process are great noise reducers.

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty good kit overall, especially for my daughter who loves rocks and crystals. However, there is no instant gratification that is normally demanded by a 7 year old. You will need old pickle jars (or equivalent) right out of the gate. Of course, we did not have any handy. Then you mix certain items together and essentially wait a day or two. Also, some of the items can be hazardous so keep this in mind if you have little ones.

Only criticism--- the directions did not indicate (by photo or diagram) where to oil, but on-line, I was able to find a website that helped. Strongly suggest that specific directions be included about where exactly to oil around the axis. We are very satisfied!

The child i bought this for was excited to dig for the gold as he has had dinosaur excavation kits before and realy enjoyd those. He had fun digging for the pyrite but when he saw the first piece he dug out he was not happy with it. his comment was "that doesnt even look like gold, you cant fool anyone with that." That came from a five year old.So it is fun digging but the pieces look more like a plain rock with a little bit of gold paint on them.

(More customer reviews)My son is into dinosaurs these days. He is four and needs some supervision with this project, but it is great fun for both his dad and I to help him with. It comes as a small brick, with a small brush and digging tool with the bones "embedded" within it. Then you saw away on it until you "discover the bones" and then you carefully brush away the bones and then put the skeleton together. Great fun. I don't know if older children would dig it as much but my four year old is "diggin'" it.

Once I saw one you really had to scrape and brush away at, and it was a project that you could work on for 2 hours, and put it away for another day. This kit is fun, however my two boys, ages 5 and 7 had all the pieces dug out in less than 20 minutes. They loved the activity, and the treasures, but I would have liked it to be a little harder.
