My family likes to work puzzles while we watch our nightly television, and we were very pleased with this particular puzzle.
The puzzle fits nicely on a standard-sized kids' poster board, the kind you can buy for a few cents at pretty much any school supply store. The finished puzzle size is approximately 17" high and 27" wide. The metallic sheen is very pretty without being an impediment to working the puzzle (although there was one and only one incident where a combination of the angle I was working and the overhead light made the puzzle a little too shiny to work, but a quick adjustment in posture took care of the problem). The puzzle pieces are just the right sizes and shapes for a 1,000 piece puzzle - nice and small with the standard array of shapes, nothing outlandish. The card stock of the puzzle is pleasantly sturdy and I don't think a single puzzle piece was bent out of shape while we were working it.
I had expected this to be a potentially frustrating puzzle because I wasn't sure if the silver oceans would have to be 'brute forced' into place rather than strategically inserted. Surprisingly, however, the puzzle itself is very detailed, with latitude and longitude lines running all over the map and little word labels everywhere. Pretty much every piece of the puzzle can be located and placed directly into place if you just stare at the front picture long enough. Which isn't to say this is an easy puzzle - I found the challenge level to be pleasantly high without being impossible.
The only possible complaint I could have for this puzzle is that the pieces don't snap together as firmly as some puzzles do, which resulting in an issue where if you lift out an incorrect piece, sometimes the surrounding pieces would want to follow because they didn't cling closely to their neighboring pieces. This also meant that sometimes, very rarely, it's tricky to tell if a puzzle piece *actually* goes into the spot it just loosely snapped into. This isn't too much of a problem with the map areas, but the solid red border did cause us a couple of spots of trouble where we'd gather around and wonder if a piece "really" went in that spot or not. But I think little incidents like that are pretty much inevitable with a puzzle of this size, and I can count on my fingers the number of times it happened, so it wasn't a problem.
This puzzle is pretty enough to preserve and hang on the wall, if you happen to have a bottle of Liquid Puzzle Saver Glue on hand. We chose not to glue our puzzle because we'd like to work it again someday, but it's definitely nice enough to hang on the wall if you like ancient maps.
