One thing that is really neat is that your younger child can win, even if they are not the smartest in the group. (If they can manage to land on Wise Alec spaces.)
Those cards instead of being questions are more like commands-for points the player may be told to "pat your head, rub your belly." Another card said to "give 3 other words for sleep."
The game says it is for ages 8 and up. My 8 year old pretty much struggled with every category question given. In order to give her a fair shot, I just began to make up some questions from recent things we had learned. Game questions are categorized in History, Science, Spelling. (I must admit even I struggled with many of the History and Science questions.)There are two levels you can choose from. The lower level questions usually gain the player 3 points, where the harder question gains 7. Of course this usually allows the older player to win, because they have more knowledge. That is where the wise Alek cards come in. The problem is that if younger players cannot answer questions, they won't continue to play because they become frustrated and feel it is too hard. Playing a modified version with younger children would be my suggestion. Another great idea would be to use test review questions with your children, this could be a great way to review homework, or for an upcoming test.
In my opinion the spelling words are pretty challenging. My 9 year old could not even pronounce some of the words, so he could not ask me the question. He was able to spell a few of the words, but they would really be more appropriate for Jr. High-Adult age range.
