(More customer reviews)The sub arrives in its own wooden crate, inside the cardboard box, inside the Amazon box. It even has instructions on how to unpack it, but they appear to be for another packing scheme. The model itself is well protected from the vagaries of shipping. Still, a screw driver is all that is needed. It is advertised as 19.5 onches long, but I measured 25 inches from bow to stern. But then, 150 times 25 inches comes to about 312 feet, which is the length of a Gato class submarine. It has good detail. There are two minor errors. The piece on the top of the conning tower seems to be reversed. The model had the radar toward the bow, and the radio loop aft. From all the photots I have seen of this class of sub, it should be the other way; radar aft, radio forward. The other error is the paint job. The lower hull should have been nothing but gray, and not the red of the model. The brass plaque gives it the name "USS Barb", the submarine immortalized in the book, "Thunder Below!: The USS *Barb* Revolutionizes Submarine Warfare in World War II" by Eugene B. Fluckey. This certainly is a great model and certainly has an important place in my home.

The first USS Gato submarine was first launched in 21 August 1941, commissioned in 31 December 1941 and decommissioned in 16 March 1946. It was the first submarine that was produced massively between 1941 and 1945.In New York and Baltimore, the submarine was placed in service as a Naval Reserve Training vessel. And in March 1 1960, it was placed out of service from the Navy. From its service in the Second World War, it received battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation.It has the finest American design and has the standard type of US submarine from the Second World War. It was based on the Tambor submarine. Modifications and improvements were done on the Gato to increase its combat abilities. Batteries and its engines were improved to increase the period of its patrol.
