(More customer reviews)Whether you liked MirrorMask or not, you can't deny that the Sphinx cats in that movie were messed up. I loved them. As soon as they appeared, I knew I had to have something of them, be it a poster or cardboard cutout. Luckily, I found this bad boy, and ordered him immediately. Heck, I ordered a second one just so I could have both faces displayed! I'm still confused as to who actually made this statue- Gentle Giant or Diamond Select. The box has Gentle Giant's logo on it, and yet when I contacted their customer service about getting a replacement, they said that this statue wasn't made by them. How 'bout that? You'd think they'd want to say that they made it, considering that if it is, it's one of the products by them that's actually worth buying.
The Sphinx is superbly sculpted, and its body is as sleek as the standard Apple product. It's shiny, and features a combination of purple, silver and grey colors. You place him on the base via pegs in the feet, and he stands up perfectly, with no risk of falling over on his own. The face plates were a great feature, and you get one with a neutral expression, and the other has more of a smiling/"HUNGRY!" look. Both of these have pegs that easily go into little holes on the Shinx's head, though they are at risk of falling off because of how small the pegs are. Be careful that nothing bumps into it, because the face plates are pretty thin, and while mine never broke no matter how high they fell, I could see it happening at some point. The wings are gorgeous, and as you see in the picture, have tons of colors. I can proudly say that what you see in the picture is most likely what you'll get with the actual statue- something that's rarely said with Gentle Giant products (hey, maybe it really isn't made by them then...). The bottom of the base has your standard "x out of x made" info and all that.
Sadly, it's the wings that also have the biggest problem. Over the course of a few months, my first Sphinx's wings began to droop. They're actually quite bendy, unlike the rest of the statue, so be careful with these too. But mine didn't stop at the drooping- the paint started to chip away too, until the wings just plain snapped off. I was heartbroken. I don't know if it had to do with temperature or what, but it still happened, and you should consider it before buying as well. Something else is quality control with the paint. On my first Sphinx, the paint on him was flawless, and the face plates had a lot of different tones. On the second Sphinx, his face was almost entirely grey, with no shading like what you see in the picture. It's not a big deal, but I'm picky when it comes to things like that, and when you're paying for a high end collectible, you expect things to be done right.
Even with that major problem, I still think about buying another one of these because of how great it was. Whenever I'd look at the Sphinx, I'd smile right back at it. The fact that this even got made is incredible since the movie pretty much bombed. If only they would've made others for this line aside from just the Dark Queen. 'so much potential, but I'm still happy with what we got. If you liked the Sphinx at all, and can get one of these for a good price, go for it.

One of the most intriguing characters from a new film Mirror Mask is the 'Sphinx Cat.' Here we have a surreal critter spawned by the imaginations of Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman who juxtaposes a photo/video facial aspect with a vibrantly winged feline body. The effect is unsettling and made more so when the cats stalk protagonists Helena and Valentine with mayhem on their mind. Gentle Giant Studios has interfaced with CGI data provided by Mr. McKean and The Jim Henson Company to bring this fascinating creature to full 3-D realization. It is stunning. The statue comes with two interchangeable face plates, allowing the owner to interchange them and display different facial expressions.
