(More customer reviews)I got this toy for my son for Christmas, and he loves it. We've built several structures together, and I see his mind beginning to grasp ideas like gravity and momentum as he experiments with it.
I just wish the darn thing was more durable! The first time we set it up, several of the cable-hangers snapped apart. They are very delicate and fragile, and that doesn't jive with a six-year-old's sometimes clumsy fingers. I need to contact the manufacturer for replacement parts, as parts of the structure need the hooked cable clasps (tieing them on interferes with the marble).
I'd still recommend it, particularly if your child can handle delicate parts without snapping them.
The original box didn't hold up long; we have a small rubbermaid tote that we keep all the little pieces in. There are literally hundreds of tiny pieces, so you'll need a way to keep them all together once the box dies.

(More customer reviews)I am amazed reading all these reviews. Many state it took hours to build and doubts as to whether an 8 year old could do it. I have this set plus another from this company in my school age classroom (5-12 years old, before/after school and summer camp). It took 4 of my students working together to build this set about an hour. I only had to step in to break up any arguments. The youngest engineers were 7. There was one 8 year old, and the oldest was 11. It is possible for children to do.
As for the educational aspect, it is great for logical thinking and scientific experimentation. Once children start building their own creations, and yes it is possible, they start exploring the science of "what if", as in "what if I move this piece higher" or "what if I change this angle". Of course parents and educators sometimes need to supply the terminology and maybe an idea or two to move things along.
Last on the educational theme, paired with other household or classroom objects this becomes a great way to introduce children to Rube Goldberg and making new inventions. Go ahead and Google him, I'll wait.
My point with this review is you cannot to sit back and be a spectator with any educational toy. It does require some parent involvement. If children get bored with this amazing toy, then it is the parent or educator's responsibility to step in and encourage new play and experimentation. Let's face it, any toy becomes boring if nothing new is introduced.

(More customer reviews)My five year old and I built the first designs together and since then he's been off and running, on his own when I'm not able to join him. He doesn't always build designs that work but that is actually a good thing, as now he's talking about how the marble didn't have enough momentum to make it through a dip in the track to the next high point. When I initially saw all of the smaller pieces, I worried that it would be too fragile for a 5-year old but the pieces are bendable and so fairly forgiving of structures falling over. I suppose eventually they'll accumulate damage, but I anticipate we'll get a lot of use before that happens.
My husband and I have both had a lot of fun with this toy too--it is easy and fun building really cool roller coasters with loops, spirals, crossing paths and lots of twists and turns.
My only complaint: I wish the blue, circular bases that support the track were heavier or designed so that they could be weighted with sand. As taller supports are built, they have a tendency to tilt and become unstable. We've solved this by using our wooden blocks to weigh them down.

(More customer reviews)I was initially concerned about the durability of this product since similar marble runs have been rated as low-quality or wobbly. HOWEVER, my concerns were quickly put to rest when my niece and I began constructing towers on Christmas Eve!
The pieces fit together easily and the bases are fairly sturdy on an even surface (we didn't have much trouble on the somewhat uneven carpet either, however). There are a ton of pieces (moreso than a lot of other marble runs) and there is an interesting variety of spirals, swirls, vortex pieces, spinners and slides.
My niece is 4, and really enjoys putting the marbles in to see where they go (bonus points if they shoot off to nowhere, in her opinion).
This set is designed for older kids if they're going to play on their own. HOWEVER, with adult guidance my 4 year old loves it and does very well with it...and mom and dad approve!
Bonus: This is just as much fun for adults to play with as it is for kids. It's great to have a toy that I don't mind playing with (EVERY time I'll be coming over). I'm seriously considering buying one for myself just to have around. It's great fun!

The Learning Journey Techno Gears Marble Mania Extreme Construction Set Review

(More customer reviews)The twin boys from next door loved Discovery Toys Marble Works, but it was starting to loose their interest. Thought I would "upgrade" to what looks like a very cool toy, adding gears and a "power lifter" to the "marble experience" and so i bought "Marble Mania"
It comes with about 25 different types of "parts" that all friction fit together. The manual is okay, but could really use a bigger format to make reading / reference easier. It took me about 5 very frustrating hours to assemble this monster. Hint: group the similar parts together and make sure you have the right piece...because if you don't you will have to take it all apart and start over. Also, the manual only illustrates the "pictured" construct...some alternatives that require different levels of understanding and demonstration of gear ratios and other "capabilities" would really enhance the learning "possibilities / fun".
Anyway, the base does not completely interlock and will only stay together if mounted on a tabletop or hard surface. This makes moving the toy very problematic. Hint: get a piece of wood plank and cut to size to provide a permanent base for the toy. This is not something you assemble, take apart and put away...just too complicated and time consuming to re-assemble.
The friction fit allows for quite a bit of "play" in the alignment of the various gears and slides and must be constantly adjusted to keep the gears and marbles running as planned. The unit only comes with 3 marbles...for $50, they could provide a bag full.
Still, the motorized "power lifter" is cool (if very slow) and the marble runs are pretty interesting, once you get the alignment of the supporting framework perfect. It held the boys interest for about 20 minutes...pretty long for these two. They are too little to experiment with alternative configurations which would probably be a lot of fun for a pre-teen.
I think this toy would be excellent if your child has the patience, skills and interest in creative problem solving required to assemble the structure. Children who could go beyond the pictured construct and build "experimental models" with these parts would have a lot of possibilities to explore.
Don't plan on a young child building this on their own or being able to use it unsupervised.

(More customer reviews)I have to admit I was hesitant to buy this item after reading the negative reviews. However, my family found that the negative issues others experienced were simply not the case with us. There are claims that this toy is a "one trick pony," or in other words that it is only good for one thing. However, the products own webpage has plans for several ways to reconstruct the parts in different configurations.
The bottom line is that if your child is inventive and likes building, they will like this toy. Ours even found uses for the parts with other toys like Legos, Bionicles, etc.
However, it can be annoyingly noisy at times. And pets like dogs can activate it its on/off mechanism pretty easily. Those are the only two warnings I would advise potential purchasers of this product.

(More customer reviews)Look closely at the picture on the box. You will see that there are strings that are connecting the middle structure to the furthest away part of the rails. The reason for this is that the rails are not very rigid and without the strings, the rails will deflect so much due to the weight of the marble that they will fall off. The instructions have a few designs that the Skyrail can be made into, and due to the rails not being that rigid, there is not much more you can do with it. It might be a good toy for those that can follow instructions well, like to put together a lot of parts, are satisfied with the few configurations, that are careful enough not to break the parts, have the patients to adjust the strings properly, and are gratified with the sound of the marble going around. If that does not describe the child you are getting it for, then it will likely be constructed a couple of times and then sit in the corner and occasionally be switched on for a few minutes.
