The invention of motors brings Technic models to a new level and I'm excited to see what Lego will develop in the years to come. The bulldozer is suprisingly powerful and has excellent range for the remote control. It's a definite must-have for Technic builders.

(More customer reviews)I am a 30 year old AFOL (Adult Fan Of Lego) and have been eagerly awaiting this set since seeing the preview pictures. I must say I was not disappointed when it arrived. Functions include 6-wheel steering (manually operated), extending/retracting outriggers (manually operated) a 6 cylinder engine with pistons that move in and out when the model is rolled on a surface, Pneumatic boom elevation, motorized hoist up/down and 3-section boom extension. The boom can also be (manually) rotated 360 degrees.
This is a set with many functions that will delight mechanical minded folks both young and old. Build time was around 8 hours, and I have assembled many large Technic sets. If this is your first time it may take longer.
The capacity of the crane isn't very much for its size, but it is really designed to showcase mechanical functions more than do actual work.
This set also builds a cherry-picker type aerial lift truck (bucket truck) that looks interesting if you tire of the crane.
For those interested in the parts, there are a good assortment of smooth beams and also a decent quantity of classic studded beams which seem to be getting scarce in the newer Technic sets. Of course there are plenty of the common Technic pins, liftarms, gears, etc. This set has the larget piece count (1884) of any Technic set ever produced! If you are a fan of Lego Technic don't even hesitate, buy it today!

LEGO Technic Excavator Review

(More customer reviews)I'd been wanting to get into Technic LEGO for a long time and finally jumped in with both feet by purchasing the excavator/bulldozer, street bike/chopper, mini tractor/side car motorbike, dune buggy/ tractor, and telehandler/front-end loader kits. I have to say that I am wholly satisfied.
I've only built the excavator of this kit and it's such a beautiful piece that I want to admire it, play with it, and study it a little more. It was the second kit I built following the mini-tractor, which is a tiny intro to the Technic system. This excavator has a rather intricate gearing system combined with some ingenius use of fulcrum and pivots that is pretty damned cool. It has a large swivel plate and tracked wheels as well.
I bought some Bioncle a few years ago just for kicks and since have had fun mixing the pieces with the kids in my family to make "Robots!". I wanted to get into Technic to add the mechanical aspect and the excavator is an essential bit of that system. I love to just play with it and examine how the pieces are related and I'm learning a lot about how to use Technic. It will probably be a couple months before I take it apart and build the dozer, if I can bring myself to do it at all. I hope I don't end up buying two more of the sets, one for a permanent dozer and one for pieces to free play with.
If you're interested in Technic, you'll learn a lot from this. The finished model doesn't have quite the robust appearance that the street bike or telehandler have, but the gearing and fulcrum build of it more than make up for it. It's a killer set, and perhaps my favorite from the mechanical aspect.

LEGO Large Dump Truck Review

I purchased this dump truck for my son over the weekend. While the toy is very detailed and has tons of play value, it is not very durable for a Lego toy. As opposed to everything in the model using bricks and plates, Lego created a molded plastic dump for the truck instead of making it out of plates. Also, if you push down on the truck while pushing it forward, it tends to snap the frame and you have to do a quick fix.
Despite these drawbacks, it's still a great model and would work well with any Lego layout. Enjoy!
