(More customer reviews)My son got this for his fourth birthday and it was a huge hit! Not only did he love "taking care" of the beetles at their various life stages, but he also learned a ton. Playing outside this spring (nearly a year later) he found a beetle pupa in the soil and proudly showed it to me and announced what it was.
One note of caution - young children shouldn't do the transporting of the Bug Barn from point A to B, because it can be taken apart from the base. This helps with cleaning when you're all done, but can lead to a mess of spilled bran if bumped really hard (the onlooking two-yr old taught us that!).

(More customer reviews)When I saw it in the store I just had to get them. I read the handbook many times. I was very excited when the sea monkeys hatched. They are very tiny and white.They are the perfect pet but you have to follow the directions on the box carefully. You need to to 3 tasks each day to their cage. So it may be hard for younger children to care for them. I am going to get more sea monkeys because they taught me a lot about reading all directions. Also because you do not have to take them on walks or give them a bath like other pets.

(More customer reviews)Sea monkeys can be fun, easy to care for, and educational. However, there are lesser known pets that are arguably more fun, much more educational, and just as easy to care for. Triopses grow much larger in size, are more interesting looking (they have three eyes!) and have more educational value. They've been on earth for so many millions of years, sometimes they are described as living fossils.
Plus, they're better for impatient kids. When they're still growing they double in size every day.
In short, this summarizes the coolness factor: Sea monkeys are just brine shrimp. Triopses will eat brine shrimp.
I gave this toy three stars because it's still basically a good product.
