(More customer reviews)This was a great tool for the kids. They gave it there all and then called in for help to get some of the parts to fit. They just aren't the perfect match. Even though some of the parts are meant to bend a little, they just don't fit the overall picture. It was a very educational piece of work; meaning you can teach them the reality of getting things that are in parts. They don't always fit together well and they don't always end up looking like the picture. But on the other hand, it was fun to see them work so hard and try so diligently to get all of the parts to line up and slowly become what they interperated as what was on the box cover. And if you tighten the bolts too tight, they colored coating of the parts will peel off.

(More customer reviews)The set is expensive for what you get and the paint comes off when tightening the screws. Requires lots of dexterity due to the small size. After a year, it rarely gets played with. I understand the concept is to BUILD but this toy takes the fun out of building.

(More customer reviews)My son (11 1/2) just bought this with his own money and loves it. It's not one of those toys that goes together in a few minutes and they're done. He's great at tinkering and this has taken him days. And, yes, like the other reviews, it took a little dad help at some junctions. I am impressed that it is keeping my son's attention and he feels like he's accomplishing something. It would be quite the 8 year-old who could do this successfully without help. Solid toy, cool look, right in line with Erector's reputation. I will look for more toys like this.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my son's 10th birthday, product marked 8 and up, as he greatly enjoys this sort of toy. The parts are extremely well made and obvious care has been taking to ensure of the fit and finish as well as proper quantity of the parts in the box. It comes with all the tools that will be required for construction; no additional tools required. The educational value is virtually limitless. It is possible with some imagination, and maybe another set, to create structures both complex and simple. These are the positives.
The negative (singular) is unfortunately the daunting level of dexterity required to make even one of the models outlined in the instructions. Even I found it challenging having to hold this nut while turning that screw and all the while trying to keep these parts in place. This is the reason I rated it only a three. My son despite his best efforts is unable to complete some of the steps without my assistance. Granted this is not many; however, for the age rating given I would expect something simpler.
Most challenging steps can be overcome with a judicial application of planning the assembly of whatever the offending piece(s) may be. I will concede that this gives a very good excuse to spend more time with your child and that is always a good thing.
In summery this is a versatile construction set with near limitless possibilities. If your child is interested in constructing for imagination then this is bound to keep them entertained for hours. If (s)he plans to build from the instructions be prepared to provide some assistance. I firmly believe these problems could have been overcome by better step-by-step instructions, "beefier" (wider, thicker) parts, or simply raising the recommended age by a few years.
