(More customer reviews)Although the box is emblazoned with the claim that this is an indoor toy, the instructions say you need at least a 13-foot x 13-foot room with a 10-foot high ceiling. Every house I have ever lived in has had 8-foot ceilings, so I don't know who or where this toy was designed for. And the room would seem to have to be completely empty; every time the thing bumps into something, it flips on its back, falls to the floor and lies there flailing around like a turtle on its back (only noisier). Wow, what fun.
This thing puts a serious hurting on the 6 batteries it requires. After 3 charges, the brand-new batteries were close to depletion. That third charge took 29 minutes, after which the toy ran for 4 minutes, and after the third minute it never got more than 3 inches off the floor. Oh boy, we're having some fun now.
(Get this, from the instruction book: "WARNING: Never charge battery unattended. Charge battery in an isolated area.... There is a risk of the batteries exploding..." So, am I supposed to sit alone in a hazmat suit for half an hour, waiting for my next 4 minutes of "fun"?)
As written on the box: "This incredible indoor UFO (apparently they don't know what the "U" stands for) hovers and avoids objects in any room as if by magic!" Two inches down, on the same side of the box, it says, "IMPORTANT INFORMATION: ...Keep away from obstacles..." That sounds like pretty weak magic. You can't control it, you can't direct it, basically all you can do is stand and watch it until it bumps into something and falls on its back. Gee, mom, I never had so much fun.
OK, so you do get one control: on the charging station there's a button that will allow you to turn the thing off from a distance if it gets stuck against the ceiling or some such. But will you ever want to turn it back on?
If you're thinking that taking it outdoors would solve the bumping-into-things problem, the instruction book warns that "sunlight may affect performance." Not to mention that the instructions also warn against any sort of breeze (air vents, fans, open windows). If I were to be stuck indoors with this thing, with the air conditioning or heat turned off, no fan, no open window... No, forget it, I wouldn't allow that to happen.
