It is a good way to start telling them how moving pictures work.
The led and the looking hole is not really necessary, the effect works w/o those, but at night it makes it even more appealing.
The screw at the middle of the stand is probably unnecessary, and the whole thing would probably not last long in the little hands... but it is fun for her and for older kids the templates can be even more fun and more educational.
I actually packed it away and will break it out for her again once she is a bit older.
p.s. It could be improved if the way to replace the paper disc would be easier and less prone to tear the paper / break the toy, but at least my niece was able to learn to do that quickly and w/o breaking anything. Definitely not recommended for smaller ones.

Praxinoscopic Fun Kit Animated kids (of any age) will love building their own praxinoscope, the successor to the zoetrope in the development of motion pictures. The finished product stands approx 5-1/4" tall with a 5" dia platform holding any of the (6) included pattern sheets, each with (2) animation patterns, or the (6) blanks waiting for creative urges to fill them. A 10-sided mirrored reflector is viewed through a frame, and includes a yellow LED for nighttime use. Button cell batteries included. For ages 8 and up.
