Could be better...
I paused while holding the package in my hands wondering whether or not I should return or keep it. I already received Shinji's purple unit from this line and was disappointed. The same is mostly true for this review. I'm not a fan of the X-mas ornament shiny metallic color, but all the rest of the detailing is fine. The main issue is a lack of joints or pose-ability. You can't see from the limited product gallery image, but the shoulders and hips only rotate to and fro. The shoulders and legs cannot spread outward. The elbows can rotate outward and the wrists are flexible. No ankle joints and the knees do bend. Forget standing this unit up in any cool poses besides ATTENTION! The head rotates 360' (no up and down). That's a killer, right there. When you watch Evangelion, you can't help but notice how flexible and fluid and..dynamic the Evas are. A stiff doll just does not do them justice!
Accessories: Asuka's unit comes with the mandatory Progressive Knife, A large Spear, battle axe and an arm cannon, which needs the entire arm replaced at the shoulder to hold/mount. I dislike when I have to switch appendages/limbs to add weapons or reach certain poses. The gas pump (battery line) has a tighter fit than the one for Shinji, but it falls out after 5 minutes. In a funny way, it almost seems related to the battery time in the show, if you could re-imagine that it worked that way. The hands have little pegs that fit into the different weapons handles, but they tend to fall out of the grip if lightly bumped anyway.
This toy works best if it was standing on a shelf in very calm pose among other figures. The color, that I'm not so fond of, is rather unique and would probably draw the eyes in. If you intend to recreate scenes or defend NERV headquarters from the Angels; there are better options for a bit more money. In the end I decided to keep the unit- mostly swayed by the arm cannon. Using it doesn't require the kind of mobility a knife attack would. Plus- Shinji could use the help.
