I had expected perhaps a plastic clock face, however, the entire clock is wooden or something, and the black and red notches are painted. This means the notches might not be filled in perfectly, or may bleed a tiny bit outside. From a short distance, the clock looks pretty good, though. Initially, I had some trouble putting a battery in too. I had to be pretty forceful with it. On top of that, the clock is pretty loud. A fast ticking can be heard as the little motor is whirring away. I keep it in my room, and it doesn't keep me from sleeping or anything, but it's easy to hear.
Considering you can't find a clock like this anywhere else (I think), you don't really have much of a choice. But it's really not a bad product. It's aesthetically pleasing, being such a simple design. Ultimately, it depends on how much of a fan you are of the graphic novel. I'm pleased with the purchase overall.

Real wooden wall clock looks just like the Doomsday Clock from Watchmen. Fortunately, midnight on this clock doesn't necessarily predict nuclear armageddon.
