Since Micromachines are no longer made, he picked this up at the local big chain toy store a couple of months back. He loves them and they have held up well even when he has a couple of friends over to launch the cars at the building. Overall very happy with this purchase.
Good news:
The buildings/streets/etc are standard lego sized pieces, so you can merge in as needed. The directions are better than standard lego. The buildings/tracks are much better than the Matchbox playsets which are generally cheap plastic that easily breaks and does not come apart nicely to store for when the toys get boring for a while. And you are actually building stuff with Legos, and rebuilding as needed.
Cars are pretty cool, and my son loves them. Most sets have a special light up car that blinks when it is moved - seems to be a watch battery and will require a special triangular screwdriver to replace. Initial batteries are still going strong so they last for at least several months of heavy play.
The launchers are pretty cool and durable, and this set comes with 2. The cars get going fast enough and get airborne enough to be fun, but the cars are light enough that it isn't dangerous or going to cause damage on proper playing surfaces. Sometimes launching a car through a ramp will knock off some pieces of the building, but the are legos so you can build them back.
The smaller size + lighter cars means they may not be safe for really kids, but you can get a nice sized city on a train table sized area and the cars are not going to cause damage when they are getting launched about. The cars are pretty much the same size as old micromachine cars, so the micromachines work in the car launchers/etc.
Can join nicely with other sets or with other Lego kits, so you can build a little city with the road pieces joining them all.
The bad:
Stickers :( Annoying to put on, and when left in a humid room some of them peeled off. Lego custom pieces would be much better!
More lego pieces would be nice - if you want a city to survive a horde of boys playing simultaneously, you will need additional pieces to connect/fortify the road/buildings. An extra 2 or 3 pieces to join each road helps, and the buildings can also be reinforced with a handful of pieces.
The buildings are not 100% lego - you generally build a frame and put these thin clear plastic "walls" over the frame. This does allow for the cars to go shooting through the building, but they don't give you extras and I suspect these will be the first pieces to break. In their defense they are all working now, but still suspect.
