I remember as a kid, my mother, brother and I would spend many an evening gathered around the larger, more clunky version of this game, each of us assigned to a lens or two, trying to recreate random light/sound patterns generated by the machine. Back then, the immense size was probably its biggest drawback. This handheld version is perfect!
The game is wholesome fun and improves memory and concentration to boot. There are three different play options, but the big draw of the game is obviously version 1, which challenges the player(s) to repeat a series of lights/sounds. Simon gets progressively harder, not only adding a light/note to the chain, but repeating them at a faster pace as the player keeps up.
Children and adults anywhere can get hooked on this game! There's even an option to turn the sound off (though it's less fun without sound), so you can carry it and play it in a train, airplane, or other crowded location without annoying the bejeezus out of everyone around you. For an additional challenge now (as an adult), I like to try to take on Simon's challenge with my eyes closed, echoing the musical tones rather than relying on the visual light pattern.
I brought my Handheld Simon back home with me when when I recently visited my family and my mother still loves it now as much as she did when I was a kid. I'm buying her one as soon as I'm done typing this.
